...With the behavior here, it feels more like I've stumbled into Bedlam.

The townsfolk were native, were they not? Are they descended from ones brought here? I can't imagine their bloodlines being entirely pure without any outside resources.

But beggars can't be choosers.

Pure? I'm not sure I understand what you mean.

You know... Untainted bloodlines. If bloodlines cross over too many times, it can lead to birth defects, so I'm told.

Oh... I've always heard the opposite. How strange.

Unfortunately, most aristocracy feels the opposite. They seek to keep the families the same handful. Queen Victoria's family is rife with disorders.

Buggered if I know. I try to think of them as little as possible.

It's not entirely a pleasant thought, but they are more common and might be easier chosen from, I suppose. What with journals, it'd be harder to track.

Who are you? We've spoken before.

Yeah, but after you've had your mentality switched to be one of them? It's not pleasant.

Probably not. Name's Crowley.

I will never be one of them.

Hm. Crowley, then. Your accent is familiar. Where are you from? I was born just outside London.

What's a "Bedlam"?

...A bed and a lamb combined?

No, no. Bedlam is an asylum for the insane in London. It's a very nasty place. Nothing but nutters there.

[...O-oh.]

I don't think this place, Paradisa, is like that.

Everyone certainly seems to be overreacting to trivial things and shouting quite a bit. It's not what sane people do, in any case.

I am not a vampire!

I seek something far more substantial from them. Besides, the body's just an extra.

I fail to see why their blood purity should matter. This place, regardless of it's oddities, is an entire world; I see no reason that they should be truly any different from most other humans in any other world.

The matter is mainly their interaction with other communities. Societies are kept healthy by meeting other societies, through breeding and cultural exchange. If this group of natives has not interacted with another constant culture, the effects can be undesirable.

bedninja April 16 2011, 10:27:09 UTC
...Then you are concerned with effects such as interbreeding? That seems like a rather odd thing to be worried about.

It's a manner of taste.
