It was night time and raining. Not hard driving rain, but the light sprinkling kind that leaves everything glittering when the sun comes out, because sometimes reality just has no appreciation of how to set the right mood for a scene ( Read more... )

[Maladict often wanders the castle grounds, largely out of boredom, and the hope something interesting will happen to alleviate it. Needless to say, she finds it today. It takes her a few moments to place this man, after all, their meeting was brief and she largely left Polly to do the talking. Eventually, though, she remembers who he is, and wanders over. Carefully, mind, she's heard stories about this guy, and she'd rather not get him...riled]

Commander Vimes?

[He starts at the sound of a voice, but recovers quickly enough.]

Who're you?

[The situation hasn't quite sunk in yet. Give him a minute.]

[She's still taking it easy. Just in case]

I'm Corporal Maladict, a soldier in the Borogravian army. I...uh was there at the peace talks in Kneck Keep. [Another pause] Hate to break it to you, but you're not on the Discworld any more.

Borogravia...Borogravia...

Right! That little backwater country that kept getting in the way of the clacks.

[He looks around.]

Where the hell am I? This isn't where I went to sleep at all.

[Booth's an early riser. Military, habit, personal preference... it felt better to be up with the sun. Which is why he's dressed for a run and heading down the stairs in time to spot the sleeping commander.

He slows for a minute, taking in the unfamiliar uniform and the very, very still stance, before reaching over to rest a hand on his shoulder.]

Hey...buddy. You alright?

[Vimes twitches at the hand on his shoulder. Of course, for someone who's spent as long as he have living on the streets of Ankh-Morpork, a "twitch" involves a backhand swing of the fist around to the side of the head of whatever bloke was stupid enough to try and sneak up on you like that.]

Woah! Calm down, Pal. [he catches the fist easily enough, but pulls his hand away from the other man's shoulder all the same.] No need for violence.

Nervous reflex.

[He blinks and looks around. He's pretty sure there aren't any parks this nice back home.]

Where the hell am I?

[Del would have been out at night, except like all good little crazies she was too busy exploring the maze in search of that vitally important button she swore to Something she had left somewhere before she remembered to pick it up.

When the maze failed, she had to try other avenues. Like newly arrived castle-kidnap victims.

Hi there.]

[Hi there, says the man sleeping upright.

Or...doesn't say, I guess.]

[Glances around... He seems to be alone.

Crouches in front of him, arms wrapped around her legs, and waits for him to wake up.]

You know, sleeping outside is really bad for your health. Unless you're trying to catch a cold.

[Hello, Commander. Have a well-dressed man giving you a bemused look as he stands nearby.]

Ha! Last thing I want is things that are bad for my health.

Then why sleeping outside? There are rooms in the castle, you know. There's one on your name on it, I'm sure.
