I can see how far they spread, so it should be easy to do a controlled burn. The roots aren't too deep yet, either -- looks like some areas have been pulled up already, too.

[It isn't much of an idea. It is really hardly more than a fleeting, fractured thought that's the result of too many scattered clues and pieces of information trying to be fitted together. But Fred can't help but consider the link between the saplings and the trees.

And wonder if there isn't something there.

She's just closing the distance to reach them when she sees the first flames leap towards the sky, already close to consuming them entirely. Before she even has a chance to try.

There's only a few still undamaged that Fred can see through the smoke, and Fred runs to reach them. Once there she frantically pulls at them, trying to free them from the ground]

[She's already coughing as the sharp, chemical scent of the fire starts to fill her lungs. But that doesn't prevent Fred from standing her ground, continuing to yank upwards where her hands are wrapped around the sapling. She almost has it free]

You know that big blood tree?

It's got a bunch of little saplings, I'm burning them before they get too big to destroy.
