[An open journal picks up a sharp intake of breath and a couple gasping coughs. The protesting moan of a mattress and rustling sheets as someone sits up. There are a few moments of just breathing, until it comes even. When Kat finally speaks, it's soft and dark, barely picked up by the journal ( Read more... )

[Okay, so. Someone was waiting outside her door with crossed arms and a stopwatch, keeping an eye on the nameplate and hoping that was enough to keep it from disappearing. Paranoid? Maybe.]

You're twenty-two hours late, Noble-Two. Supposed to be two weeks.

[Is that an echo? She sees the words appear on her journal, but it certainly sounds a lot closer than that.]

You'll have to forgive me. Someone forgot to set a waypoint.

Go ahead and let yourself in.

[Well, at least he knows it's not locked. That would be because he dropped her armor off yesterday, complete with shiny new shield enhancements.]

...Welcome back.

[She hasn't put her armor on yet, hasn't made any other move beyond sitting at the edge of the bed, barefeet on the cool floor, hands perched on the mattress, shoulders slightly hunched. She tips her head just slightly as he enters.]

Status? [Not prepared to relax until she knows exactly what happened.]

Isis was taken care of by a group of residents. Lois Lane was unharmed.

Copy that, appreciated.

[A pause, it's good to hear your voice] You sound alright.

Good. [Hopes they can keep it that way]

Anything else of note? [She was getting the low down from York, but it was always good to check whatever resources you could.]

[Have the sounds of some debating replying for a long time. Stalking the post. Not having the slightest clue what to say or if he should say anything at all...]

[She's aware of it, she can guess who might be at the other end, but she won't reply. Not going to push him, either way.]

[Written, figuring it'd be a little more anonymous] Good to see you back, Spartan. Would have been starting to wonder if you decided not to come back if I'd been of my right mind. Find your gift?

[She just watches those words for a long moment, letting them sink in. She knew exactly who that was, and it was a little confusing considering the lack of insults or condescending tone]

[Dicated, her tone worn and still a little qioet] Yes, I did. It's appreciated. [It was rather hard to miss the basket of alcohols that had been set on her desk.]

...I'm glad you're back. Did someone fill you in?

[ even if she barely knew you. she still left a rose at your grave! ]

Affirmative. York gave me a quick rundown and supplied me with a full report that I'll be going over later.

[She'll appreciate it when she sees them, even if she doesn't know who left them there. The nature of the Spartan project made such little considerations difficult to bestow; she won't be expecting it.]

You don't waste any time, do you? Most people would want some time to recover...

[Kat can't help but give a small noise of frustration. Throwing herself back into what's familiar in order to avoid thinking about it, about the guilt she piled on herself at not being able to do anything, probably wasn't the healthiest way to deal.]

Sitting back won't help me figure out how to combat this sort of thing in the future, and lets face it; it's only a matter of time before we're hit with something similar - or worse.
