"One," quothe Alice

[Eyes still closed tightly against the stinging of the water and running makeup, Alice resurfaces in a graceless splash of limbs.  The first thing she notices that isn't quite right is the suspiciously chlorinated water that she's roughly coughing up between gasps for air, because it doesn't taste a thing like the ocean.  When the sole of her boot connects with the smooth bottom of the pool, that's the second hint that she isn't where she was supposed to be.  The water level hits just below her shoulders when Alice stands, eyes now open and peering up with annoyed confusion at the ceiling that had somehow replaced the night sky she tumbled through with no evidence of the plane she'd just fallen from up above.

Well, if they were going to search for her body, they certainly weren't going to find her here.

Not too far from the edge of the large pool, it doesn't take Alice long to hoist herself up and out.  It's then that Alice notices the neatly folded towel by the poolside as if it were waiting specifically for her arrival, an innocent enough looking journal resting upon it and open to a blank page.]

And what is the use of a book without pictures or conversation?

[She pushes the journal aside and grabs for the towel instead, pressing the terrycloth to her makeup-smeared face.]

I do wonder what CAN have happened to me!
