[as the castle at large dealt with their newfound charges, Mat had been quietly reveling in his freedom. He'd spent the first couple of days in town, going from bar to bar for a bit of gambling, well away from the pitter patter of little feet. Not that he had anything against kids. He was just grateful not to be dealing with one of his own. No thanks, there.

He would have just stayed away entirely (after all? What was there to do in the castle? No one had time for a game of cards and all the gorgeous women he'd met were suddenly moms), but something was different today.

He could hear the dice rolling in his head when he got up, rolling when he walked through the town, keeping his feet restless. Eventually, he'd just let himself wander until he found himself back in the lobby, sitting at a table and rolling his actual dice, not that it did anything to stop the rhythm in his mind.
