I've been in scary situations before and I didn't. And they were scarier than that.

And why were they scarier?

The situation was worse. I had fewer allies. I was more threatened and closer to dying.

Did you know what to expect from the enemy?

I don't know. Maybe not.

Paradisa has a way of throwing the most unusual of circumstances at us. It is no surprise that one of them might cause a reaction other than rationality.

I just - what if we could have done something so no one had to die? What if I could have done something? I was busy screaming and panicking and being useless!

As I recall from reading a summary of events, nobody in your group was responsible for his death.

If I'd beaten it all to the punch. If I'd somehow broken the stream of action, said "wait, let's talk".

[patiently]

You must also understand that not everyone is willing to sit down and discuss. Regretting what you did or did not do in the past, especially when events were out of your control, is not a practice I recommend.

I just - what if that person was one of a kind? The only one? And now he's dead. And it is partly because of us. Is it any less my fault that Renzo's dad died, just because I wasn't the one to kill him?

Perhaps he was, for the sake of argument. Does that then place his life's value over your own or your friends?

There may have been other courses of action you might have taken that ensured his life. But in doing so, it is very likely you may not have been able to save this new person, whom he was holding captive. Even if you had been able to sit down and talk, who is to say he may have had anything worthwhile or truthful to say?

And on top of all that, what is there to say that he will not return in the same manner we do now? This situation is very much unlike the one you have attempted to compare it to.

I just... it was an awful way to die. Such an awful way... the first person we find who might've been a real native of Paradisa, really unique, and now they're dead...

Certainly. But it is also entirely possible there may be more.

People aren't just replaceable, though.
