Let it never be said that he went without trying. The second the gas hit, he snapped back, sharply moving to try and cover his mouth with cloth.
The confines of the sheathed form however, while adequate enough to keep him typically alive, unhurt and usually unnoticed, still left him open to one or two human flaws. Breathing just happened to be one of them.
