A newlywed husband observed his wife making a roast one day, and noticed she cut about 1" of meat off the end of the roast before putting it in the roasting pan. When he asked why, she said, "I don't know, that's how my mom taught me to do it. Always cut off an inch before you put it in the pan, she told me. But I don't know why."
So the next time they went to visit the wife's mother, they asked her. "I don't know why," she told them, "That's how my mother taught me to do it. Try asking her."
So a few weeks later they visit the wife's grandmother and ask her, "Do you cut an inch off the end of a roast before cooking it?"
