So to anyone who has superior computer knowledge to myself (ie. everyone), the taxman has effectively prevented me from pissing an amount of money up the wall this year which, pending its return, will be turned into a PC. I haven't had a desktop for ages and while I think I understand what various parts do individually I have no idea if what they ( Read more... )

I've been looking at this pretty closely http://www.msy.com.au/SYSTEMS/AMD-Gamer1.pdf

How many cores do I need though?

I have to admit I love how they've preserved their old email aesthetic since they got a proper website.

I'm like that about lasers. Was getting my brother a DVD player for his birthday a few years back and the guy was like "This one's a bit low-end, but it has two lasers..." and I was like "I'll take it!"

My hope is that if I have enough cores the cores will speak to each other and achieve sentience... although sadly they will never know what it is to have a human heart.

There's a place that's better than MSY. Can't recall the name, but Drew just got through building a system for a friend to specs similar to yours and it cost around 800-1000. If you can hold on for a few hours I'll dig up the info.

Actually, it's GTS computers. They're in Melbourne. Drew, his gamer buddies and myself all got systems from them. You can get a hex-core system, with 4 gig of gamer ram, 1GB Radeon card, 1TB drive, for around $1200. If you're okay with something less hefty you can do it for $800-1000.

I'll see if I can get a hold of Drew, he might be able to kick some specs and a price estimate to me.

By 'Melbourne' I meant 'Malvern.'

PPS: get onto eBay and search for GTS Computers. Bunch of readymade systems there.
