Outside work last week, Rene found a baby nighthawk under a car. (He has a weird affinity with birds; odd considering that as a child it was his singular joy to shoot them with his BB gun.) It couldn't fly and was in a bad place, so he grabbed it. At first, I thought it was not a baby, but an osprey. But then I saw it didn't have a hooked beak and ( Read more... )

Rats? They can be cute! Haven't you seen Ratatouille? (I... have no idea how I spelled that right.) But, seriously, I was just talking to somebody the other day how utterly devoid of wildlife the West Bottoms are. The only wildlife I see are homeless, half-way house residents, the boxers from next door, the art scene rats, and tons of pigeons. Oh, and our building has mice I never see; I just see all their droppings.

I love all kinds of animals. I have a special fondness for rodents in particular (used to have three cages packed with hamsters, due to a poor male-female selection. *coughs* They breed very fast). I would very much like a pet rat, too! I think they make terrific pets. (I've seen Ratatouille, too, and loved it ( ... )

Wow, all of what you have described (from rats, to cats, to dogs) has fed me setting ideas for any such time as I may need them. The Athens animal population will likely get use. Hmm, likely if I ever do my 'In the Kingdom of the Blind' fic. Yeah, that would be perfect.

In Japan, cats are often seen and fed in the residential areas. At my Japanese university there was a female called 'Wash Rag' (forgot how to say that in Japanese) because of her markings. She was friendly and most students enjoyed her presence.

Outside my small apartment building we had a few kitties. Our main female had a kitten by a beastly tomcat in the area. On a whim, I named the kitten Oedipus. Oedipus turned out to be female. Oedipus also ended up running off her mother so she could mate with her beastly father. Talk about life imitating art.
