Happy Endings (part 1)

Mar 27, 2011 21:44

Because I think I'm running out of time and battery on the netbook, I decided to split this into two parts so that I can at least get one part up and running while I type out the remaining ten pages worth of fic. Yes, it got to 19 pages in total.

Media: Fanfic
Title: Happy Endings (part 1)
Rating: G
Pairings: Klaine, lots of Klaine.
Spoilers: Some very brief and generic references to episodes 17 and 18. And to season 1-ep 5.

Word Count: 2,099 approx
Summary: Thursdays are movie nights at the Hudson-Hummel house, and this week, it's Blaine's turn to pick the movie. Kurt realizes Blaine REALLY likes Disney.
Note: Inspired by watching YouTube videos of Darren Criss (Blaine) singing some of my favorite Disney songs and making my heart melt into little puddles. This is also the first story of a five-part (hopefully) series I plan to write when not getting blind-sided by random, cracky one-shots (courtesy of a certain Blaine Anderson).

Happy Endings

Thursdays were movie nights at the Hummel-Hudson house. They were usually nights when Finn went to play video games at Puck’s house and slept over, and Burt and Carole headed to a jazz bar after a late dinner and didn’t return till after midnight.

Kurt wasn’t sure if they did it out of fear of another bitch-fit, or genuine fear of the incredible saccharine displays of affection that tended to happen when he and Blaine were in touching distance. Well it if was the latter, it really wasn’t his fault. Blaine’s skin seemed to have magnetic properties that naturally drew Kurt’s hands to him.

Either way he didn’t care. A relatively empty house meant he got to cuddle up to his ridiculously real boyfriend without anyone walking by and wondering if they were doing anything other than holding hands under that blanket. It meant that he and Blaine got to share a single bowl of ice cream and lick it off each other’s lips without Finn commenting that he “didn’t need to see his step-brother doing that”, leaving Kurt to wonder what the hell Finn was doing behind them in the first place.

Finally, a storm of righteous indignation and the full force of those ice-cold blue eyes ensured that he would have the house to himself on Thursday nights. Well, mostly to himself.

He snuggled contently against his boyfriend’s side; legs partly curled under him as they sat together on the couch, and licked ice cream off his spoon.

Tonight’s movie came from Blaine’s surprisingly large Disney library, and as he watched Aladdin parade down the streets in some over-the-top performance in an effort to impress his currently unimpressed and out-of-reach princess, Kurt started to notice a rather uncanny similarity between this and a certain incident on Valentines Day.

“Blaine…”

“Hmm?” The dark-haired boy was busy grinning at the screen and chewing on a piece of cookie dough.

“Please tell me your idea for the GAP Attack did not come from a Disney cartoon.” A soft choked-off cough and a traitorous blush told Kurt all he needed to know. “Oh, my god.”

Blaine did his best impersonation of a kicked puppy, hazel eyes all moist and warm. “I thought we were never going to bring that up again?”

“It was merely an observation.” Kurt tried not to look at him.

“It sounded good in theory.” The pout was in his voice now.

“Well, I hope you learned that what works in Disney is not always applicable in reality.” Kurt felt more than saw the slump of Blaine’s shoulders.

“Does this mean I can’t take you out in a boat on the lake at twilight?”

Kurt quirked an eyebrow at his insufferable boyfriend. “Depends. Will there be Warblers hidden in the reeds singing ‘sha-la-la’ and encouraging you to kiss me?”

“I don’t need their encouragement to kiss you,” Blaine replied, leaning over and doing just that. “But can I still take you out in a boat one day?”

Kurt snorted and rested his head on Blaine’s shoulder. “Blaine Anderson, you are a dork.” Again, he felt the smile more than saw it.

“I’m your dork.”

“Mmm.” Kurt laced their fingers. “That you are.”

A comfortable silence settled over them as they focused on the movie again, only broken by Blaine softly singing along to ‘A Whole New World’ while running his fingertips lightly over Kurt’s arm. Kurt closed his eyes briefly and let Blaine’s smooth, rich voice flow into his ears and envelope his consciousness.

“Let me share this whole new world with you.”

Kurt’s fingers tightened on Blaine’s in a silent invitation to please do just that. Blaine pressed a kiss to the soft brown hair in response, loving the trust this boy had in him and hoping he could live up to that trust.

He set the empty ice cream bowl and spoons on the side table beside him and Kurt took the opportunity to lie partly across his lap now that both his hands were free, smiling softly when Blaine wrapped both arms around him and nuzzled the curve of his neck.

“Let me take you to the prom in a horse-drawn carriage?” he murmured.

Kurt couldn’t stop himself from throwing back his head and laughing. “Theory vs reality, Blaine, where would you even find a horse-drawn carriage, let alone one shaped like a pumpkin?”

“I could ask Thad…”

Kurt blinked, not sure if Blaine was being serious. The raven-haired boy grinned down at him with all the eagerness of a puppy dying to please. He reached up and touched Blaine’s cheek.

“I just need you at my prom, Blaine. Just you,” he said, then grimaced. “Besides, Rachel would never let us hear the end of it if we upstaged her proposed grand entrance.”

“Which is what, exactly?” Blaine smoothed back his boyfriend’s hair.

“Mercedes mentioned something about Ms. Saigon and helicopters.”

Blaine’s hazel eyes widened. “Can she do that?”

“This is Rachel Berry. Her mind functions on a different plane than the rest of us.”

The other boy made a sound of agreement and cuddled Kurt closer. They focused on the movie again, Blaine resting his chin on Kurt’s shoulder as they watched heroes and villains clash in the final battle.

“What about a flying carpet?” Blaine asked suddenly.

“Helicopter,” Kurt repeated without missing a beat. “You wouldn’t want to get caught up in the propellers.”

Blaine cringed. “I really didn’t need that mental image, thanks.”

“Just stating reality,” Kurt said, reaching over to pick up the remote and switch off the TV and player. “You really have an unhealthy obsession with Disney, you know that?”

“And you have an unhealthy obsession with scarves,” Blaine replied.

Kurt blinked. “Touche.” Blaine looked victorious and Kurt rolled his eyes. “Care to explain it?”

Blaine kissed his temple, then leaned back to try and word his answer correctly. “I like happy endings. Growing up with my dad, my old school, having people tell me I couldn’t… shouldn’t… be what I am, trying to take it away from me…” he looked down to see Kurt’s clear blue eyes looking up at him in understanding. “I guess… I liked how the princess always stayed strong and never gave up hope that someday her prince would come.” He tilted Kurt’s face up and kissed him gently. “And they were right. I got my prince.”

Kurt blushed. “Am I the Prince Charming to your Snow White then?”

Blaine chuckled. “Actually, I like Prince Philip from Sleeping Beauty better. I mean, he actually got to fight a dragon. Snow White gives me mental images of Wes, David, Thad, Jeff, Nick, Trent and Shelton as the Seven Dwarves.”

Kurt snorted in amusement. “Yes, I can see how that would kind of be a turn-off. Though of course you realize the irony that you’re shorter than all of them.”

Blaine knew Kurt didn’t mean it unkindly and laughed as well. “It did cross my mind, yes.”

“So do I get to expect kisses in my sleep?”

“Now that would be telling.”

“And please don’t tell me you have some sort of secret cave you keep hidden from your father with a statue of me inside.”

Blaine tightened his hold on Kurt. “I don’t need a statue when I have the real thing.” He bent forward and kissed the other boy again, slower and longer this time, loving how it left Kurt slightly breathless and made his cheeks a little rosier.

He released Kurt so he could lean back against the armrest and stretched his legs out along the length of the couch, smiling when Kurt settled between them and leaned back against his chest. Kurt closed his eyes, listening to the steady beat of his boyfriend’s heart. While he didn’t subscribe to the steady diet of Disney that Blaine seemed to have thrived on, he could see the appeal.

Months, hell, weeks ago, he didn’t believe ‘Happily Ever After’ existed, not for someone like him anyway, but yet here was this charming, dapper prince sweeping him into his arms - sometimes literally - and trying to carry him into the sunset. The imagery at least was endearing.

“What’s on your mind?” Blaine asked, kissing a shoulder. “Reconsidering any of my proposals?”

“Don’t get your hopes so high where I can knock them down again, sweet Prince,” Kurt replied, rolling his eyes again when Blaine feigned a shot through his heart. “I was merely wondering if there was any Disney movie you didn’t manage to finish.”

Blaine tilted his head and frowned a bit, trying to recall. “Hmm… the Hunchback of Notre Dame - too depressing. I felt so bad for Quasimodo, and I’d read the original book for Literature class.” He tapped his fingertips against Kurt’s. “Song was really pretty though.” He let Kurt manipulate their hands into a game of thumb-war. “What about you? I know there’s a lot you probably haven’t seen, but any you couldn’t finish?”

Kurt tried to focus on pinning Blaine’s thumb with his own, and glanced at the clock to see how long more they had before Blaine had to leave, and his dad and Carole came home - tomorrow was still a school day after all. He still had a few hours.

“Bambi,” he said at last.

Blaine’s eyebrows went up and he let Kurt win. “Really?”

“Please hear me out before you judge me.”

“Of course.”

Kurt reached down and pulled a blanket partway over them, noticing little goosebumps start to appear on Blaine’s skin, and tried to gather his thoughts. Blaine let him take his time, holding him close and giving him whatever support he needed.

“Not from lack of trying,” Kurt said at last. “I tried twice. The first time, I was ten years old and watching it with a baby-sitter while my dad was out for something. I ended up crying so badly that the sitter got scared and we turned it off.”

Blaine was starting to guess why, but only kissed his cheek and let him go on if he wanted.

“The second time was last year,” Kurt continued. “I was drunk.”

Blaine started. “What?!”

Kurt chuckled. “Glee club drama - Rachel and Mr. Schue had a fight, Rachel left, Mr. Schue brought in April Rhodes: ex-glee clubber with a drinking problem who never finished high school, but boy, could she belt out a number.”

“Sounds like an interesting story,” Blaine said, still a little unable to believe that Kurt Hummel of all people would let himself get drunk. “How did the alcohol come in?”

“April gave me a flask of something. Don’t quite recall what it was, I was younger and naïve. Anyway, I sat at home drinking that night - dad was out again - and I thought maybe I’d try to watch Bambi again; thought being drunk would make me numb…. I cried worse than the first time when the hunters shot Bambi’s mom. I thought, what kind of people could be so cruel to take that little fawn’s mother from him and leave him all alone with a dad that barely knew him.” A tear slid down Kurt’s cheek. “I didn’t know how a story like that could have a happy ending. I cried all night and the next morning I threw up on Ms. Pillsbury’s shoes.”

Blaine wiped the tear away and kissed the damp cheek tenderly. “I’m so sorry, Kurt.” He held his boyfriend tighter. “I didn’t mean to upset you, but I promise you, it does have a happy ending.”

Kurt sat up a bit, looking hopeful. “It does?”

Blaine smiled and nodded, smoothing Kurt’s hair down. “Would you like me to tell you what happens after that?”

The other boy looked thoughtful, and he let out a long slow breath. “I think maybe I’d like to watch it again and find out.”

“Kurt…”

“With you. Will you watch it with me?”

Blaine wanted to tell Kurt that it was okay, he didn’t need to watch it again, didn’t need to prove himself, but there was a look in Kurt’s eye that spoke a single word to Blaine’s heart - courage. He had no right to deny it to Kurt, so he nodded.

“Okay. I’ll bring it over next Thursday?”

Kurt smiled and nodded back. “It’s a date.” The clock on the wall chimed eleven. “And I guess it’s time you headed home.”

Blaine sat up. “I guess, but not before I do this…” he cupped Kurt’s face and kissed him gently, lingering on his lips and trying to show him how proud he was of Kurt’s courage. “See you tomorrow, sweet Prince.”
