Seeing And Believing 2/?

Verse: G1
Characters: Prowl, Jazz, Bumblebee, Seekers
Pairings: Prowl/Jazz
Rating: PG-13 for mild slash and violence
Warnings: erm... Jazz antagonizing Starscream?
Summary: When you're as different as Prowl and Jazz are, working together becomes an interesting prospect
Notes: This was written at a time when just about everyone was debating the matter of Jazz's optics/visor. The theories were everything from them being green/gold/magenta/neon orange, to being Decepticon-red, to him being blind, to the visor being his visual center. I never bought into any of those. So this was written partly to counter all those theories.
Disclaimer: I don't own them, they own me.

Chapter 2

Prowl felt his metal skin tick as the sun started to sink towards the horizon and the day start to cool. He, Jazz and Bumblebee had spent most of the warm afternoon parked close to one of the manufacturing plants the Decepticons were predicted to try and raid at some point. Beside him, Jazz bounced a little on his shocks, a little impatient to see if his guesses and Prowl’s analysis had been correct.

“You’re sure they’re gonna try and hit this place first?” Bumblebee asked. “I’ve been watching it for a couple of days now and there hasn’t been a peep from ‘em.”

As if to spite him, a loud boom echoed across the compound and the three saw smoke rise a moment later.

“Guess that answers that question,” Prowl said as he transformed and stared to run.

“And they’ve brought Thundercracker,” Jazz added as he kept pace with him.

As they burst from the trees and into the compound’s parking lot they found the trio of Seekers busy helping themselves to the plant’s raw materials. They looked up as the three Autobots appeared, weapons drawn. Starscream gave a feral sneer as he dropped the beam he was holding and turned to face them.

“Well well, looks like Optimus Prime hasn’t disappointed us after all,” he said. “We were starting to wonder if you Autobots would arrive at all.”

“Put down those items and leave the area,” Prowl said dryly.

“You don’t really expect us to obey that do you?” Skywarp asked.

“Just gettin’ protocol outta the way,” Jazz replied. “Where’re the humans?” He sounded casual.

“Scattered like insects when they saw us arrive,” said Thundercracker.

“Oh, that’s good then.” Jazz glanced at Prowl.

“It is?”

“Of course,” Prowl replied. “It means we can, open fire!”

The two Autobots fired weapons, with Bumblebee following a moment later as he had not been expecting Prowl’s sudden command. Their shots hit the Seekers, but only managed to knock them back since Autobot weapons were rarely designed for killing unless they were at close range or high power.

“Spread out and drive them off,” Prowl instructed. “Bumblebee, keep Thundercracker busy; Jazz, keep an audio on Skywarp; I’ll handle Starscream.”

“Gotcha,” Jazz said.

“You got it, Prowl,” Bumblebee added.

“Remember, whatever happens they must not be allowed to get away with the raw materials,” said Prowl.

The Autobots spread out. Small and fast Bumblebee was able to keep Thundercracker distracted easily by making quick hits-and runs at the blue jet whenever he tried to make for the main buildings…. Logical Prowl was able to easily predict Starscream’s methods of attacking and had no problems in blocking or dodging the Air Commander’s hits.

Jazz honed his sharp audios in on atmospheric frequencies, picking up on the subtle shifts as Skywarp attempted to teleport in and out. Nine times out of ten he got it right and was ready for the purple-and-black Seeker, and the few times he got it wrong, he was still fast enough to counter-maneuver.

Everything seemed to be going well… until Skywarp decided to teleport himself to a spot where he could take a shot at Prowl as Starscream forced the tactician to step into a spot that left his back unprotected. Afraid to shoot in case he hit his partner, Jazz activated his other arsenal.

“Prowl, cover!” Jazz yelled as his full-spectrum beacons flashed with a blinding light.

Not expecting the sudden change in battle plan, Prowl started and looked straight towards Jazz as the mech released his light assault. Too late to pull it back or reduce it’s intensity, Jazz could only watch helplessly - his own optics protected by his visor - as Prowl dropped to the ground with a cry, hands over his optics. Skywarp reappeared again, arm-laser aimed at the back of Prowl’s helm.

“Prowl!”

Jazz started to run to him and ended up flat on his back, brutally ploughed into by Starscream, leaving an impressive dent in his mid-section and a throbbing in his own head as it bounced quite hard off the ground.

:: Bumblebee, retreat :: he sent over a tight wavelength.

:: No! I’m not leaving you guys! ::

:: Someone’s gotta get word of this back t’Optimus. Scram, kid, that’s an order! ::

The lack of response told Jazz that the yellow Minibot had done as instructed. In the meantime he tried to rise, only to find Starscream’s foot on his chest-plate, pinning him down. Seemed the three Seekers were in a bit of a dispute over what to do with them.

“Ain’t yer footstool,” Jazz growled as he strained to get up.

A savage kick to the side of the head sent him right back down again. Slag, that had hurt.

“One more quip like that and I’ll burn your faceplate off,” Starscream sneered at him.

“I still say we just kill ‘em both right now,” Skywarp said, jabbing the business end of his laser into Prowl’s helm. “Then get what we came for and get outta here.”

“Are you mad?!” Thundercracker replied. “You kill them and what’s to stop Optimus Prime from sending us all to the Pits?” He looked at the Air Commander. “I say we just knock ‘em out, grab the materials and leave. In case you’ve forgotten, the yellow one escaped. Probably gone back for reinforcements.”

“Silence! In case you’ve BOTH forgotten, I’m in charge of this raid,” Starscream fumed. “And we’ll be following MY orders. Do you even know who these two Autobots are?”

“Didn’t know we were famous,” Jazz said and received another kick, this time to the shoulder.

“Shut up,” Starscream snapped at him before looking back at his wingmates. “Just think of how it will look when I return to base with the Autobots’ Second and Third in Command as captives. Megatron will surely have to recognize my superiority then, because it will prove that I am more suited to lead the Decepticons.”

“This mean we get to watch you get blown across the room again?” Jazz asked.

Another kick to the head shut him up a third time, but he did hear Thundercracker give off a muffled snort of amusement. That was interesting.

“Pick them up and head back to base,” Starscream ordered.

“Yeah? And how do you expect us to carry Autobots as well as all this material?” Skywarp asked.

“We’re not going to be carrying any material. Why bother when, with two senior Autobot officers as hostages, we can make the other Autobots deliver the materials to us.” Stepping off Jazz, Starscream bent and hauled the saboteur to his feet, tossing him to Thundercracker. “Don’t try anything funny if you and your friend want to reach our base still functioning.”

“You heard him, get up.” Skywarp prodded Prowl in the back.

Prowl hesitated, stretching his hands out in front of him as if searching for something. Jazz watched him worriedly, itching to go over and help his partner.

“What’s wrong with you? I said get up. We ain’t got all day.” Skywarp prodded him again, harder this time.

“I cannot see,” Prowl said. “My visual sensors are non-functioning, likely burnt or shorted out.”

“Let me help him.” Jazz started forward, a little guilt-stricken.

Starscream knocked him back, sending him stumbling against Thundercracker, before going over and hauling Prowl up to his feet none too gently. He peered into the tactician’s blank face, then raised his hand and cupped Prowl’s chin.

“Get your hands off him!” Jazz sounded a little more nervous than he should have been about what the Seeker might do to his beloved. All he got in return was a blow from Thundercracker to keep quiet.

Prowl winced. “Jazz, please… be silent.”

“Ain’t gonna let him hurt ya.” The saboteur struggled to get free of the blue jet, but the blows were starting to take their toll on him.

Starscream grunted in the meantime as he examined Prowl’s optics. “They look burnt out. By my estimation, the wires connecting to your neural circuitry shorted out in that flash.” He released Prowl. “You’re pretty much blind.”

Jazz wilted. Prowl on the other hand was about to ask how Starscream knew this when he remembered that the jet had been a scientist once, before the war. He sighed.

“Can they be fixed?” Jazz had come to the same deduction.

“Oh, I suppose.” Starscream shrugged. “If you ever get to see your medic again, that is. Take them.”

The Seekers hoisted the two black-and-white Autobots between them and took to the air….

…. Once the sound of their engines had faded into the distance, Bumblebee stepped back out onto the plant’s grounds, his comm.-link open.

“Bumblebee to Prime. They took Prowl and Jazz with them.”

:: Perfect. Now we just have to hope the two of them can get themselves out of there ::

“There’s just one problem, sir. There was an accident during the fight. Prowl’s lost his vision.”

:: I see… Is Jazz alright? ::

“They roughed him up a bit, but I think he’s okay.”

:: Then we’ll just have to trust in their abilities. Prowl’s blindness was an unforeseen occurrence, but we’ll to hope that with Jazz there, he’ll be able to manage. ::

“Let’s hope so. Is there anything else you want me to do around here?”

:: I’m sending out a team to secure the area. Once they’re done, return to base with them. ::

“Got it, Prime. Bumblebee out.”

The yellow Minibot cut the comm.-link and then looked up at the sky in the direction the others had gone.

“Good luck, you two. You’re gonna need it.”
