I am sitting in the lounge at ADPhi, listening to Sonia read Joan Didion's "On Self-respect". Despite the fact that the weather has decided to assure the population of Providence that it is now December and winter will soon be upon us, I am relatively warm, thanks to the fire in the fireplace and an unending supply of tea from the tea cabinet.

I am realizing, more and more, that the things that I value most are the irrational, the unexpected and the intangible. This isn't to say that I don't value the order the rational, expected and tangible effect on my life; I am quite thankful for the laws of physics that keep me standing on the ground ninety-eight percent of the time, but I am content not to commit my life to the study of said laws. I am conscious that the world needs Arabic translators and future presidential candidates, but I am perfectly fine with not being one of them. I will not feel like my life is worthless if I don't have a job upon graduation or choose not to go to law school.
