Much to Jakeem’s chagrin the JSA Brownstone, his home away from home and the loudness of Aunt Lashawn, was practically empty. It was Father’s Day and most of the heroes were either gone in celebration or mourning. The only one there was Mid-Nite, and he was doing something that sounded extremely complicated in the basement.

The young hero lounged in the chair to the monitor room. It was just so quiet… and boring. He had been fooling around in the ring downstairs with the Thunderbolt (Wildcat wasn’t around) but the purple genie was tired and Jakeem let his friend rest, back in the ink pen in his pocket.

Right about now Tom and Ted would be off doing something-a boxing match, a bar, something; Rick and Jesse are with Rex, GL is probably somewhere with Obsidian-who tends to keep out of sight anyway And that just left him. Everyone was gone.

Quit sulking, before you do something stupid like last year.

Last year he had tracked down his father Phil, only to find out that Phil had no idea that he was his father and that he had a new family.

Maybe I could tell him the truth this year, Jakeem mused as he thought of Phil hugging his new wife and his new son.

I could leave and tell him, no one would know.

“No, that’s stupid,” Jakeen hissed to himself.

“What’s stupid?” a curious voice asked behind Jakeem’s chair.

“Nothin’” Jakeem answered as he peaked around the chair.

Mid-Nite stood in the doorway, his cape and gauntless gone and his sleeves pulled up. Charlie flew in above the surgeon’s head and landed on the console in front of Jakeem. Lightly, the bird nipped at his fingers.

“Nothing can’t have personality traits, that’s impossible. Nothing is incapable of being sentient,” the doctor mused. Jakeem peered at the man. It took him a moment to realize he was kidding.

“Man, you’re something else,” the boy drawled.

“I’ll take that as a compliment.” Mid-Nite sat down in the chair next to Jakeem and the boy shifted in his seat. “Hmm… It’s a quiet night. I guess even criminals have fathers to honor.” Jakeem felt the blind hero turn towards him. “You still haven’t explained the phenomena of the stupid nothing.”

Jakeem sighed and shrugged. “Just thinkin’”

“What about?” Cross asked without missing a beat.

“You don’t let nothing go, do you?”

“Occupational Requirement.”

There was no way he was going to get out of this. “You ever give something up, something you really want, because you know it’s better for someone else?”

“You mean sacrifice?” the doctor inquired in a small voice.

“Yeah, yeah sacrifice.”

“All the time. It’s what we do, right?”

Jakeem bit his lip as he thought. “But, how do you know you’re doing the right thing?”

Mid-Nite turned now and gently laid a hand on his shoulder. Jakeem blinked and met the unseeing eyes that regarded him through the specially made goggles. “There’s no sure fire, absolute way to know, Jakeem. I think the key though, is to concentrate on what you’re protecting and not what you’re giving up.”

“It’s a lot harder than it sounds.”

“It always is.” Cross tilted his head and gave off a smile. “Did that help at all?”

“Yeah. It did. Thanks, Doc,” Jakeem affirmed. “Sometimes, you just end up sittin’ around thinkin’ about what could be.”

“There are a lot of things that could be Jakeem, but you should be proud of what you are right now. I am.”

The Doc’s goggles reflected the light from the monitor’s and shined.

“Thanks.”

Mid-Nite patted him on the arm. “How ‘bout we grab something to eat, anything you want, my treat?”

“Dude, you got a deal.”
