Chapter 2 "So what do you say? I mean, you technically work fewer hours and get paid more since we're doing regular jigs now," The young man in front of her offered. Yuuka bit down on her lower lip.
"I don't know, I've never really done this kind of thing before..."
"Joe-san said you had a good voice, I do trust him on that. How 'bout you come and try it for one jam? You can decide after that. We really need a female vocalist now. We have a couple of really good duets, but we're missing the voice."
"I... guess so. Alright. When?"
"Next Friday, maybe? I'll ask Joe-san to give you a break this week and the next so you can come for rehearsals."
Yuuka glanced at the CD shop across the road. She was at the small cafe opposite the shop, with the lead vocalist of an indies band that Joe was supposedly fond of. The guy had walked through the doors that afternoon asking for her. Apparently Joe had mentioned to him that she sang in the shop, and the guy was looking for a female vocalist for his band.
Friday night regular jigs? But... She worked Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Fridays at the shop. Hikaru would come around on one of those days every week.
She shook his smiling face out of her mind. He's just another customer.
"But... I have rent and bills--"
Which is why this job is better, because I need to feed myself.
"Don't worry, I'll ask him for paid leave."
"Ah, alright then. Where?"
"Do you know cappu.cino? The bar in Shibuya?"
Yuuka shook her head. She was not one who frequented bars. The young man in front of her pulled out a page from a notebook in his bag, scribbled down something and handed it to her.
"That's the address for the bar, and then that's the studio where we're practising at. My phone number is at the bottom, so if you need anything..."
"Thanks. When are the rehearsals?"
"Tomorrow. Tomorrow's Friday right? Same as your work hours. Just drop by the studio."
"Okay."
He nodded, getting up from the sofa opposite Yuuka. "I'll see you then."
"Thank you, Matsumoto-kun--"
"Ah," he flashed her a soft smile. "Just call me Kohei."
"Hai..."
She watched him hurry down the sidewalk, guitar on his back. It did seem appealing, this new job. Singing? She always did that when she was alone, never in front of the crowd. But it was exciting. She felt tingly all over.
Yuuka sighed and looked down at her fingertips. The blisters from that night of guitar playing were just starting to heal.
She could decide tomorrow.
Hikaru wandered around the shop, picking up CDs without actually paying them any attention. It was Friday night, he had finally mustered up enough courage to plan to ask Yuuka out for coffee after work, since she finished at 9 on Friday nights. But she wasn't around. Strange.
Joe was polishing one of his guitars behind the counter, knowing that Hikaru didn't need much help navigating through the shop. Hikaru contemplated asking him about Yuuka.
No way. Too embarassing.
"So, what are you getting today? Your patronage is appreciated, especially so in the past month," Joe spoke, not looking up from his guitar.
"Nothing really, I'm just browsing."
"Right..." Joe shifted his shades up his nose a little. "At a loss cos no one's recommending you anything?"
Hikaru pretended not to hear, and ignored the hint of a smirk on Joe's face.
"I'll tell you, you know. If you asked."
Hikaru walked quickly out of the shop, his ears burning.
Tuesday, no sign of her.
Wednesday night, Hikaru gave up and walked up to the counter.
"Did something happen to her?"
"Hmm?" Joe mumbled, not looking up from his guitar. "Who?"
"Um, Eda."
"Who's that?"
Hikaru swallowed, "Yuuka."
"Ohhh Yuuka-chan," Joe finally looked up, smiling. "No, nothing happened, why do you ask?"
"Oh, nothing, just wondering."
Joe sighed, "Suit yourself. Ah~ I miss Yuuka-chan's pretty legs already~"
Hikaru resisted the urge to punch the dirty old man in the face. "She hasn't been around?"
"No, she took the whole week off."
"Oh. Is she sick?"
"No."
Hikaru waited patiently for Joe to go on, but the man simply grinned at Hikaru annoyingly.
"Alright, fine, you got me. Where is she? Does she work here anymore? Why hasn't she been around the whole week?"
Joe slid a card across the counter. On it, in neat print, were the words "cappu.cino cafe.bar.lounge" under which an address had be printed.
"She works at a bar now?"
"Mmhmm, in fact, she starts tomorrow, you might not want to miss it."
"Wait, what is she working as? Bartender? Hold on--" Hikaru's mind jumped the gun. "This isn't a hostess club, is it?!"
Joe looked mortified. "What kind of person do you think our sweet Yuuka-chan is?! She'd be so hurt to hear that!"
"Oh. Sorry."
"Go there on Friday at about 8, I think she'll be up then."
"What's she doing there?"
"You'll see."
"Joe, honestly--"
The chimes above the door sounded, announcing the arrival of another customer. As Joe went to attend to the little old lady demanding for Elvis at a high pitched voice, Hikaru slipped out of the shop, pocketing the business card.
