Part 3 Shizuna twirled in the middle of bridal fitting room, in all her puffed-up tulle, intricate embroidery glory. Kana watched with an amused smile, and slight wonder as to how the seemingly enormous and heavy skirting of the dress could even lift off the ground.
"Okaa-san wanted some changes to be made, so it's not quite the same as the picture I sent you…"
Truth to be told, she couldn't tell the difference, but she nodded anyway.
"Yeah, it looks better now. I love you. You look gorgeous."
"Can you believe it?" Shizuna squealed suddenly. "It's just 3 days away!!"
"Seems like only yesterday I was watching you eat his face out…"
"Hey!" Shizuna blushed.
"Only joking. I'm happy for you. Really."
"Oh! Wait! Gosh I am such an idiot--I know I didn't really set a dress for bridesmaids because I know if I picked one out, there's bound to be someone that the dress doesn't quite complement the dress but… Have you gotten yours yet?"
"I have, Shi."
"…Well, I actually picked one for you, if you want to try it. I'll pay for your other dress."
"There's no need to pay, it's one of my old gowns that I got in Europe," Kana chuckled. "But I'll try yours."
Moments later, the shop attendant brought out a hanger with a protective bag on it. Shizuna excitedly opened the bag and took the dress out. It was a deep navy, off-the-shoulder dress that had a high slit up the right side of the hem. There was a line of rhinestones along the neckline that sparkled.
"Remember when Okaa-san wanted a standardized dress and got you to give me your measurements? Well this was supposed to be the standardized dress--I wanted it to fit you the best but it really didn't look as good on my other friends…"
"It's beautiful!"
"Try it!"
When she walked out of the cubicle, Shizuna wouldn't stop staring. She coughed.
"I like it."
"I love it," Shizuna sighed. "Please wear this, Kana, please."
Kana turned to face the mirror. Her measurements had--luckily--remained unchanged in the past few months and the dress hugged whatever figure she had perfectly. She tugged at the slit though.
"The slit is a little high…"
"But you have nice legs."
"Still…"
"It's fine, please? I designed it myself. It'll be the best present ever if you could wear this."
"My shoulders look a little bony--"
"Kana!"
"Sorry," She laughed. "Only joking. Of course I'd wear this. I love it. Thank you."
Shizuna squealed again and tackled her in her big wedding dress, almost knocking them both over. The girls, laughing in the midst of the chaos, did not notice Takaki entering.
"Hey girls."
"Yuya!"
"What are you doing here?" Kana raised an eyebrow. "Aren't grooms not supposed to see the dress before the wedding?"
"Old traditions, those are. Nobody does that anymore. You look great by the way, Hik--people would really love your dress."
"…Thanks," her hand went to the slit again to try to cover it up awkwardly.
She was exiting the bridal shop when Takaki caught up to her and handed her a velvet box.
"What?"
"Give this to Hikaru for me, will you? The rings. He's supposed to keep them."
"Do it yourself!"
"Yeah I would if I had the time, but I don't, so…"
"What makes you think I'm free?"
"Even if you're not, you'd do it. It's your best friend's wedding."
She reluctantly took the rings from Takaki, who sported a triumphant smirk.
"Also, I'm giving you a reason to talk to him again."
"W-We're not having problems or anything--"
"He turns into the biggest blabbermouth after a round of drinks. Trust me--" he patted her on the shoulder. "I know."
He turned and headed back inside, leaving Kana standing alone in front of the shop. The skies were darkening. She pulled out her phone, her hands shaking as she dialed his number. No one picked up and it was directed to his voicemail. She sighed and ran towards the roadside to hail a cab.
A familiar song drifted to her ears when she entered the cafe. Hikaru sat on a high stool on stage, guitar on his lap, and he sang with his eyes closed, swaying to the music. She snuck quickly to an inconspicuous corner to watch.
And suddenly she was 20 again. Fresh out of a past relationship. Sitting in the cafe for the first time and sipping cappuccino. Dramatizing her breakup into a sappy romance novel. Startled by the sudden microphone feedback, she looked up at the stage and their eyes met for the first time. Bam. The rest was history.
She smiled at the memory and applauded with the rest of the patrons as he finished his song and hopped off the stool. Dropping his guitar off on a side stand, he headed for the bar counter and she followed.
"Hey," she cleared her throat and slid into a bar stool. He turned with a surprised expression.
"I didn't know you were coming."
"I tried calling you, but I guess you were performing so you didn't hear it."
"Oh, yeah, probably."
He went to the coffee machine and fiddled with it while she waited awkwardly for the conversation to pick up again. When he returned, there was a cup of coffee on the counter in front of her. She smiled.
"Thanks."
"Always glad to help."
The words stung a little, but at least he was smiling. She slid the velvet box over to him.
"Here--the rings. Takaki asked me to pass them to you."
"Oh, thanks. You met him today?"
"He was at the bridal shop with Shizuna. I was looking at Shizuna's dress and trying on my own."
"Cool," he grinned. "Let me see it!"
"Shizuna's dress?"
"No, yours!"
"It's nothing interesting…"
"Come on, one peek?"
He pouted and she rolled her eyes.
"You'll see it on Sunday."
"But I wanna look at it now! And it's not like we're the ones getting married, so having me see your dress isn't a big deal, right?"
She cupped the coffee mug in front of her face to hide her face. She took a sip and sighed. Perfect blend.
"Just be patient."
His shoulders slumped in defeat and he cast his gaze down towards the bartop.
"I didn't know you knew Fujigaya."
"Yeah he's the senpai that got me the job, actually. Does he come here often?"
"Since a couple of months ago, he's been coming here quite a lot. Told me that he wanted to arrange a date a couple of days ago so I did. Did you enjoy it?"
"…Yeah. The pasta was good."
"Of course it would be--I made it."
She slapped him playfully on the arm and laughed.
"Sure, sure. I'm so sorry though. I really didn't know he would show up so early. He asked me to dinner right after I got off the phone with you. I was gonna come here and tell you but--"
"And you agreed when he asked?" He looked at her incredulously. "I can't believe you!"
"He said that he had everything arranged and I really… didn't want to make him feel bad about it. I'm so sorry. It didn't really mean anything."
He turned to attend to another customer's order, and she could see his shoulders tense beneath his flannel shirt.
"Hikaru?"
"Are you guys going out?"
"…I don't know. It's a mess."
"You should. He's a nice person."
"I know. Speaking of relationships, I haven't met your girlfriend."
"Girlfriend? Oh. She's not back in town yet."
"Oh, okay."
After he sent off the other order, he set his arms on the counter and leaned towards her.
"Are you happy when you're with him?"
"I don't know."
He broke out into a grin, startling her.
"What?!"
"Just checking~ It's Takaki's stag party tonight. I'm getting off early and leaving the place to Tamamori. I could send you home before that--"
"I'm alrig--" She cut herself mid-sentence, giving in to his smile. "That would be nice. Thanks."
She got off his bike in front of her apartment, more slowly this time, taking her time to shake her hair out after removing the helmet. He made no move to leave after packing the helmet away.
"I'll see you on Sunday, then," she smiled. "Have fun. Try not to dump Takaki in a love hotel somewhere."
"We're respectable men, don't worry."
"Try not to end up in one yourself," she added, and he smirked.
"Who knows--maybe I would? Only joking!"
"I missed the humor."
"Aww, don't get mad," he patted her on the arm quickly. "You should head up. See you on Sunday."
"Goodnight."
He nodded and she headed for the entrance.
"Hey!"
She turned, and he was leaning on the handlebars.
"You should really go out with someone that you're happy to be with."
Like you?
"I'll… keep that in mind."
It only dawned on Hikaru hours later when everyone was well on their way to being dead drunk in the middle of a strip club that Takaki had no reason to pass the rings to Kana since he was seated right beside him now, howling as the bar girl took another layer of clothing off.
"Oi, Takaki!"
"Wait not now--"
"Why did you give the rings to Kana?"
"Use your brain, stupid!" Takaki roared with laughter, as if it was the funniest thing ever. "We need more weddings, more stag parties. This is the best fun I've had in ages. YEAH WORK IT BABY!! JUST LIKE THAT."
Hikaru missed the bra flying over his head as he looked down at his hands, unconsciously towards his ring finger. The possibility crossed his mind for a split second before getting drowned in a sea of wolf whistles. He picked up the beer jug on his table and chugged a good deal of it down in one shot.
