The "HEY LET'S ALL WRITE FEMALE CHARACTERS NOW AWW YEA HET/FEMMESLASH!!!1" phase that fandom seems to be going to is aggravating me for unknown reasons.
For me, I think it's because journal fandom has pretensions of being on the cusp of feminism (despite its obsession with pretty white and Asian boys), so why is it suddenly so important to write all about women?
It really does strike me as fucking insufferably pretentious and a bit disingenuous but I've really got no idea.
Slightly unrelated, but it also bugs me when people go "Well I don't write women because I can't get off on them." OKAY WELL HOW ABOUT YOU STAY OUT OF THE DISCUSSION IF YOU'RE ONLY HERE FOR PORN BY YOUR OWN ADMISSION.
Well. I'm not exactly sure the people doing the meta are completely blameless in all of this, but then isn't it still just navel gazing forthe sake of it?
...I'll admit I'm a little pissed off that 1) the argument is almost totally focused on TV fandom making little old Japanese Fandoms me feel somewhat left out (not that a lot of the same problems don't exist)
WELCOME TO metafandom. ANIMU IS NOT WORTH TALKING ABOUT.
2) this whole debate is a massive derail from the original debate ("is slash silencing real, actual gay men?") with a 'WELL LOOK AT MY PAIN AS A WOMAN'.
I wish this surprised me.
Loving women shouldn't be about 'pairing them up and writing porn about them instead!' - nothing wrong with that, but surely that shouldn't be what people are encouraging you to do.
It's FF13's fault; S-E deliberately made all male characters suck, or turned them into the kind of character fandom doesn't really talk about, in order to turn the girls into the best, most interesting characters in the game! Fandom is just getting reading for the wave of crazy and wank that will sweep the waters of the Internet come March!

And if I don't avoid it, I'll be overcome be pangs of guilt. You've already heard how I feel on the matter...
Then again, I'm a queer male who does slash and gen fanworks, predominantly. I'm really a nonentity.
