How much impact do you think Hojo had as far as Sephiroth's genetic makeup goes? I think Sephiroth might have inherited some of his more damning traits as well.
As far as Jenova goes, I don't think so much as that a veil was lifted as Sephiroth had a moment of self-actualization, of realizing who he was and what he wanted out of life. He notes beforehand that he always believed he was special in some way, but it seems that he never knew what this "specialness" was; when he finds it, it confuses him at first, but then he figures out what he wants and starts taking the steps to obtain it.
Anyway, I think it was part instinct, part free will. Sephiroth is a rational being, and I don't believe he would've done everything that he did if he didn't think it would lead to happiness and fulfillment.
I definitely agree with you. I just wanted to make the point that it isn't a random choice and it was being driven by something other that mind control.
I actually think Sephiroth and Hojo are a lot alike! Negative traits, certainly, but as simple as Hojo thinks he is, I think Sephiroth inherited some of Hojo's scientific way of thinking.
