008: Video/Action for Goldenrod

[Someone has been doing a lot of thinking lately in regards to the idea of families, in general, and Pokemon in particular.]

You aren't supposed to fight or hurt your family or the people you love right? [Yes that is a very important question aimed at a few people out there...]

But what about the Pokemons' families? We're taking them away from their ( Read more... )

[ You've stumped him for a moment. And also reminded him of his daughter. ]

Humans are very family-oriented, but not all animals are. I believe there's a type of sea turtles that lay eggs into the sand and then abandon them to hatch and survive on their own. It may seem cruel to us, but that is simply their way of life. I'm willing to bet that some Pokemon are the same.

I wouldn't attack a family of Pokemon if I came across one, but what if the Pokemon you've captured has actually lost it's family, or was abandoned? Then you'd be doing it a favor by taking it in and caring for it, wouldn't you?

Maybe. But what if they're just lost from their family and were looking for it and then they didn't find them until later? By then it could be too late.

I suppose that's something you can ask your own Pokemon.

[ He reaches down to pat his Eevee, who is always out of its Pokeball, on the head affectionately. ]

We might not speak their language, but that doesn't mean there's no way of communicating with them.

[She nods in agreement knowing more often than not at least her Lopunny Neu understands her.]

Tot just doesn't want them to feel bad later about it; it wouldn't be their fault if they didn't know.

Tell them that they have the right to speak up at any time, and let you know that they're uncomfortable with a battle.

We all make mistakes. Every one of us has done something that we've felt bad for later because we didn't know better at the time. But we recover from them, right? We learn from it.

The good thing about Pokemon, is that usually, the outcome of these battles aren't death, like with actual human wars. They're only knocked out briefly, and can be treated at places like Pokemon Centers. [ ... At least, that's what he's been told, anyways. ] So, even if one of your Pokemon has just fought against a family member, and now regrets it, there's still the chance of tracking down that relative and reuniting the family, right?

Tot didn't think about it like that.

[You know mister, Tot really likes you.]

There's still time for them to be together later and be a family again.

[ He's grown quite fond of you, as well. ]

It sounds to me like you care a great deal for your Pokemon. They've already got a very solid family, if you ask me.

Thank you.

Tot loves them a lot, that's why she doesn't want them to get hurt.

That's what all parents want for their children, but it's impossible to keep anyone from getting hurt at all. Sometimes, all we can really do is give them advice, and let them form their own opinions on how to take that advice.

And let them know that, no matter what happens, we'll be there for them. It seems like you're already doing that.

But you can make sure they aren't intentionally hurt, right? By what you do.

[ He nods. ]

Right! But sometimes, things happen that are beyond our control. Nobody should be to blame for it, and we shouldn't spend too much time dwelling on how things could've been, had we been given different information.

So we shouldn't worry about it but try to do better next time?

[She's pretty sure this is good for other subjects besides the Pokemon. Things to think about...]

Tot can do that.

[ Maes is getting the feeling that this is more than just about Pokemon. So he'll take this in a slightly different direction. ]

Let me ask you a question. Can you change the past?

[That happens alot.]

No.

Then why spend any time or energy on something you have absolutely no control over?

Tot's never thought about it like that.
