"New Cool Things" Dept.:There comes a moment in a generation when that generation begins to realise that they have a little more pull about the sorts of things that they see occur more than the generation that preceded them. Some people in my generation saw the election of Barack Obama as US President one such example of a kind of sea change ( Read more... )

Yours is good - especially the Caroline Bingley sub-plot...

Like I said on another person's LJ, I only dig this because the high amount of P&P sequels in the bookstore make me kind of sick.

Until somewhat recently I was also one of those "I won't read it because I hate the fandom" anti-fans of Jane Austen, though. Then I read Sense & Sensibility and was blown away, so ...

"Sequels"? As in...published and officially-sanctioned fanfiction??

How irritating that some fandoms get taken seriously and others don't. Some of the best writing I've ever read has been fanfic. Alas.

As a fanfic writer (often in fandoms that get shit from the bigger ones) and someone who has enjoyed professional fanfics, I don't begrudge people them. But given that at least one of the P&P official "fanfics" I've heard of has the characters celebrating Thanksgiving, a writer of another popular one has proven herself to be a huge wanker in public, I read parts of Pride and Promiscuity and they were pretty stupid, and Becoming Jane was an inaccurate AND boring film I reserve my right to be skeptical about Austen fanfics overall.

Too bad it wasn't written by Jane Espenson!

(She's a huge Jane Austen fan, and she's the hottest tv writer I know right now.. not just Buffy .. Gilmore Girls, Battlestar Galactica .. etc. Her particular talent is to get inside the language of a show and write the characters exactly right, whilst advancing the plot at the same time.)

I am chuckling because this book hasn't even been released and it's now shown up on my friend's page approx 3 times. I think you're bang-on re the change thing... when we can rewrite the classics and make them fun and exciting, i feel like the sun will rise on a newer (better?) world.

thanks for the chat on friday, it did me a world of good.

I'm excited at what the future is offering.
