Happy Independance Day, to all of my friends South of the 49th parallel

This is a personal favourite story from July of 1980, VERY appropriate in an election season 28 years later. I've had the panel where Cap speaks to his memory of Mrs Crosley in my head since the first time I read it - and the whole story says a lot about what makes this kind of character work.

Wasn't Tony Stark's dual identity known to the other Avengers by 1980? If so, isn't it rather weird that he keeps his mask on when inside the Avengers Mansion?

No it wasn't, not at that point. The concurrent issue of THE AVENGERS to this one is around 196 or so and Cap and Iron Man didn't unmask to the Avengers for another few years (our time, not Marvel-time, which is an elastic thing). In fact, the fact that "Iron Man" has stepped down from the Avengers chairmanship is *because* of his alcoholism - the "Demon In A Bottle Issue" over in his own title had only come out about 6 months before this one, but he still hadn't admitted that to any of them.

Yes, I am a geek.

Ah. So many years, so many drowned braincells.

I must say Tony Stark's press conference at the end of the movie came as quite a surprise. If - as hinted - the second movie follows the Demon" storyline, it'll put quite a different spin on events.

Oh man, THAT was a great issue. I have it in the "War and Remembrance" TPB.

Personally, I thought Cap woulda made a great President.

I've always loved this one. papajoemambo July 4 2008, 14:30:01 UTC

I can think of at least one of my friends who'll want an icon made of Steve Rogers at the age of 10, front row in the red sweater, as he's listening to Mrs Crosley.

I also really like the fact that Cap recognises that he's the living embodiment of an unrealized dream. Brubaker's run on the book touches a lot on the theme of "Captain America as Conceptual Hero", and when Steve eventually comes back to the book with his name on it, the fact that we've had a few years of characters reacting to his legacy will mean even more.

The young Rogers doesn't look quite as 4F as the older (pre-serum) version, though.

Things are gonna change, Muffs.

Desperation usually brings about a clean sweep - things were really off the tracks when FDR became President and within 2 years there were work projects and things were looking up. Within 4 years the people who were used to getting graft and pork were hard at work to get him ditched (as per usual - see ref: Clinton's second term) and he was reeected because people still felt he offered hope.

When the current batch of shysters are dealt with then you'll see it get better.
