Author's Note: For i_am_girlfriday who gave me the prompt Love is like a puzzle. When you're in love, all the pieces fit but when your heart gets broken, it takes a while to get everything back together.
Sometimes, when they're laying in bed together, Caroline will lift her head from his chest to look at him and she'll see the fault lines spread over him. Even though the hand on his chest can feel Matt's heart beating, she realizes just how broken he is, how he carries around everything like invisible war wounds. Elena dumping him, everything his mother puts him through, Vicki disappearing the way she did.
Every time she does this, she moves her hand to his neck, letting her thumb rest against his pulse point. When he looks at her, the loneliness in his eyes always makes her breath catch in her throat. Between the two of them, there's so much baggage that sometimes she wonders how they ever get out of bed in the mornings.
So when she kisses him and she tastes the fear that he doesn't admit to having, she silently prays to whatever deity that will listen that she'll be able to somehow put the pieces of him back together.
