A factoid: Magna Carta, the effective foundation of all human rights in the West, was revoked by the Pope not long after it was passed when King John asked him to do it. Unsurprisingly, people were pretty pissed off about this and it lead to John's removal from power. Henry VIII's reasoning for the break from Rome was somewhat short of honourable - that's a hell of a thing to do just for a shag, effectively - but I'm bloody glad he did it.

"Somewhat" right-wing? I'd far sooner hang out with NRA members than cardinals :/

I think the vast majority of people will politely nod at him from their business empires and then go back to the one true faith... the worship of making cash.

I wouldn't worry too much. xx

True of course, but the fact they've let him speak in westminster still massively undermines secular ideals, and fight for fairness in policy making. I know there's a lot of crap and biases in politics already, but that doesn't mean we should give up, shrug and be apathetic. I am so tired of apathy.

I'm pretty Meh about apathy ;o)

No but you are right. I think the day that the idealists give up, is the day we lose everything.

Do you think a secular nation is possible? Is it something that, like communism, works really well on paper?

Even in America where they decided to be secular hundreds of years ago, churches just weigh in with cash and influence politics.
