mmm, did you select the shape layer before changing to the paths palette? In there it should say "Shape 1 Vector Mask".

This is probably a really stupid question, and i feel dumb for asking buuuut.

7. Leave the settigs the same. Now your rectangle is a selection. Just choose "select inverse" and delete everything else.

I don't know how to delete everything else? D:

ohh sorry and don't say that's a stupid question! :)
well, first did you so far have done correctly all the steps? I mean did your rectangle turn into a selection? and do you know how to select inverse (Shift+Control+I)? if yes, you just need to press "delete" from your keyboard OR Menu > Edit > Clear
