  • A Parable On Obsolete Ideologies
    https://pan-2.dreamwidth.org/90594.html
You are General Eisenhower. It is 1945. The Allies have just triumphantly liberated Berlin. As the remaining leaders of the old regime are being tried and executed, it begins to become apparent just how vile and despicable the Third Reich truly was. In the midst of the chaos, a group of German leaders come to you with a proposal. Nazism, they admit, was completely wrong. Its racist ideology was false and its consequences were horrific. However, in the bleak poverty of post-war Germany, people need to keep united somehow. They need something to believe in. And a whole generation of them have been raised on Nazi ideology and symbolism. Why not take advantage of the national unity Nazism provides while discarding all the racist baggage? "Make it so," you say. The swastikas hanging from every boulevard stay up, but now they represent "traditional values" and even "peace". Big pictures of Hitler still hang in every government office, not because Hitler was right about racial purity, but because he represents the desire for spiritual purity inside all of us, and the desire to create a better society by any means necessary. <...>

  • My Four Months as a Private Prison Guard: A Mother Jones Investigation

Интереснейший экскурс в Private Prison, с т.з. работника.
Private prisons are shrouded in secrecy. I took a job as a guard to get inside-then things got crazy
(в список добавлен после натыкивание на "сравнение" немецких и советских концлагерей, хехе)

  • Science Fiction Citations
    http://www.jessesword.com/sf/list/?page=1
The Oxford Science Fiction Citations Project aims to track down the earliest use of terms in a "science fiction sense" (for example, credit was in common use to mean "buy now, pay later" before it was adopted by SF writers as the generic Currency of the Future; this group is concerned with the latter). It's interesting that various types of laser weapon are first mentioned in a cluster in the 1960s. "Laser gun" appears to have prior useage as a tool rather than a weapon.

  • Litany Against Fear - a philosophical perspective
    https://pan-2.dreamwidth.org/50068.html
I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain.
I find the Litany Against Fear to be a remarkable tool; the most remarkable thing is its incredible usefulness. As a knife is useful in physical reality, the Litany is useful in psychological reality.

  • Sniffing dogs

Берём нюхающих собачек, прогоняем двойной слепой тест, получаем результативность: Each team ran each search area twice, for a total of 36 runs per condition (2 runs/team ? 18 teams) and an overall total of 144 separate runs (4 search areas ? 2 runs/team/area ? 18 teams) (Fig. 1). ... Overall, because multiple alerts per team within a condition were possible, there were a total of 225 alerts issued. There were 21 (15%) clean runs and 123 (85%) runs with one or more alerts. Ну вроде бы неплохо, всего в 15% нет "срабатывания", в то время как в 85% собачки что-то находят. Только вот маленькая проблема...

  • The children now love luxury. They have bad manners, contempt for authority; they show disrespect for elders and love chatter in place of exercise.

I wanted to use this quote, so I needed to know who said it; however, the NYT website contained a surprise. The newspaper had retracted the quote and now there was a note that said “Its origin is unclear, although many researchers agree that Plato is not the source.” I am sure I have seen this quote before. Can you tell me where it came from and who said it?
