Both my parents smoked. Neither my brother nor I ever took up the habit. However, I don't know if it's from being around smokers all my life (my parents, most the people I worked with in the Army, etc.), but something just sets my teeth on edge when I hear about all the different ways polticians and professionals treat smokers as second-class citizens.
I know smoking is bad for one's health. But seriously...so is drinking alcohol and smoking dope and taking pills, yet movies and TV have absolutely no problem depicting these vices as "quirky personality traits."
How often are we shown the woman taking a drink of liquid courage, a man drowning his sorrows at a neighborhood bar, or a teen smoking dope to relieve stress? Quite often. And I don't see anyone trying to rate those shows as "R." Oh I'm on my soapbox. Somebody stop me.
Oh, don't get me started. I can't believe I didn't mention language in that post. I don't think I heard the "f" word in a movie until I was in my teens...and that was at theater. Kids these days hear it on cable TV! No real ratings to speak of.
I am still shocked when we watch Cable series on DVD. The nudity and violence and language is shocking. We don't have Cable. I wouldn't want my 10 or 11 year old (or younger) seeing those shows accidentally.
