Set just before
"Champagne" Everyone was used to River's breakdowns - that was normal now - but the day Kaylee broke down no one had a clue what to do.
It probably had to do with Kaylee being the steady one of the group, next to Shepard Book. She always took whatever twist life threw at them with a cheery smile and a well placed smack of her wrench.
Gotta drop Jayne out of the hold? She had a rig made up in half an hour.
Need a cover for a transaction? She had washed and gotten pretty before Mal could finish tying his cravat.
It seemed that there was nothing in the 'verse that could shake Kaylee, so the morning she ran from the table crying the crew was left sitting open mouthed.
It was River who broke the silence, “Well, go after her dummy.” and then threw her napkin at her brother.
“I don't know if I should,” Simon said softly. He folded River's napkin into a knot, “I asked her to merry me last night.”
The girls immediately let out a sigh - even Zoe - while Jayne asked, “What'd wanna do a thing like that for? She's still opening her legs, ain't she?”
Mal slapped Jayne upside the head at the same time Zoe elbowed him in the stomach and River kicked him in the shin.
