Nothing to lose. Drop them respectful and simple line, especially seeing as how the job was reposted, saying that you do understand, but also explaining what you mention above. Worst case scenario, nothing happens, and you're no worse off than now, On the other hand, someone may go "well, that's a good point, let's go with it."

That sucks. I wonder if you could find a summer class at front range or similar that teaches Unix stuff and then ask them if they'd reconsider you if you took the class?
