While the price was still a bit steep for Miles's liking, this was definately more doable. Miles felt his smirk widen slightly as the taller man shifted, tapping a finger on his elbow. For the first time since he'd gotten to Paixao, he actually felt like he was in control of a situation.

"Does that give you the right to be smug about it?"

"Yes," he said simply. "It does. Now what did you want to ask?"

Ugh, didn't people know how to be quiet? This was the second time Hojo had been pulled out of sleep by someone else talking, and he was not liking the trend.

He didn't move until he could pick out the voices that were currently conversing. Even a week in Paixao had made him cautious, moreso than he ever would have been naturally. Whether or not this was a good thing, though, Hojo wasn't sure of. In any case, it was useful at that moment, because he picked the voices out as Miles and that damned swordsman.

That damned swordsman who, apparently, was still living in the dark ages.

Oh, this was going to be good.

Something inside Dias snapped. It had probably been his patience.

He'd gone through hell itself when his family had been killed. He'd picked up his father's sword, barely fit for chopping wood, and taught himself how to fight, turned mercenary and carved out an existence for himself over the course of eight years. He'd become one of the best fighters on Expel - if winning the Lacour Tournament of Arms meant what the organizers always claimed, had become the best fighter on Expel. And he'd adapted quite well, he thought, to Paixao and all the unfamiliarity of the place. And, of course, he'd had a particularly miserable night.

And this man, this scholar Dias could lift one-handed if he chose, was condescending to him. At least when Al or Yuna laughed at him, they looked apologetic afterwards.

"You know what?" he growled. "Forget it. Five thousand, and I'll get my information elsewhere. I hope being smug was worth two thousand of whatever you use for currency, because that's what it's cost you."

Ooh, temper, temper. It was a blow to his wallet, but his pride still remained intact. Maybe he was being a bit too malicious, but at this point in time he didn't really mind.

"I have enough to cover the fee," he said, spreading his arms and shaking his head slightly. "I just thought you would put yourself at a lesser disadvantage if you got the information from me, as opposed to someone who isn't as trustworthy as myself." He brought his hands on his hips. "And exposing that sort of ignorance in a world with unfamiliar pieces of weapons and machinery..."

Dias hadn't thought it possible that Edgeworth could say anything to make him bristle more than he already was, but clearly he'd underestimated the lawyer's ability to say precisely the wrong thing. "First of all," he almost snarled, forgetting entirely that he was supposed to not be waking Hojo up, "I see no reason whatsoever to exchange two thousand fol for the chance to be talked down to. Second, I've no reason to consider you trustworthy in the first place. Third, I've - " He almost said friends, which kind of surprised him; did Alphonse and the others really qualify as friends? Regardless, he picked a less controversial word. " - companions who ARE trustworthy and who will not only explain things I have questions about, but will do it for free. And fourth, you'd do well to consider that of the three people in this room, you are referring to the strongest, most experienced, best-armed, and most irritated one as the man at a disadvantage."

Dias folded his arms over his chest, still glaring at Edgeworth. Him at a disadvantage; it ( ... )
