"Sure!" Glitch agreed -- but her words, and, more specifically, her acronym, had caught his attention. "What's a GPS?"

He gave her long enough to open her mouth -- and then he promptly interrupted.

"No, no! Let me think! Let's see... G-P-S."

And he started to think as they walked.

"Great Pestering Soundbox?" It could be that. Or... "Gamblers Precious Sapphires?" That one made him pause. "Wait. No. No, not that at all." It made no sense, for one thing!

"I didn't like the word journal," he added, "I wanted to call it a long-distance voice transporter hearing device -- but nobody liked it much!"

"GPS stands for Global Positioning System." She explained when he gave her some time to breathe. His word games were making her smile a bit though, they were helping distract her from the craziness that was her day so far.

"Hmm, that one is a bit long." She tapped her chin. "Anything you can shorten it to?" She was willing to play along for a while.

"Popcorn," he said, in answer to her question...kind of. "That's another of mine. To explain the disappearances." He was grinning at her proudly, looking all the world like a boy who had just finished his first clumsy building project.

His smile was also encouraging. "You try -- just make something up! About anything!" He was clearly a big fan of word games, despite his sporadic memory lapses and leaps of logic.

"Popcorn...like the food?" She asked, not really getting the connection, but that was ok for the moment she figured. She was really hoping to understand him somehow later.

"Make something up, about anything?" Sure, she was stating the obvious, but it was a bit weird to her. It was like, creating a small language with words already created for you.

"Why not?" Glitch asked with a carefree shrug of his shoulders. "I do -- all the time, hee!" His laugh was half-giggle, half-chortle -- full of delight. "Nothing wrong with that -- that's what I say!"

Walking along, Glitch reached up, pulling a few leaves from the branches. The shone in his pale hands.

"Something about these! Like..." Here he sucked in a breath as he thought. "Uh..." He scrunched up his face in thought, scratching the back of his head. "LUC." (Pronounced LUCK.) "Look Up for Cash." And he beamed that childish, slightly disturbing grin again.

"LUC huh? Wait, these are used for money here?" She was learning more and more as she was with this strange fellow. Reaching up, she pulled some of the leaves off of the branches also, sticking them in her coat pocket for later. She had a feeling that money was going to come up.

"So, that..." She said, pointing up at the top of the dome. "Could someone call it a skydome?"

"Uh-huh," Glitch said, in response to her questions -- all of them. "Why not call it a skydome?" He squinted upwards at it, shading his eyes dramatically with his hand. "Skydome suits it -- I haven't heard it called anything else, hee!"

And why shouldn't they make up their own names for things? It isn't like things were LABELED.

"I'd say it's got a ring to it -- whatcha think? Skydome! Dome in the sky! Dome *of* the sky -- skydome!" He was prattling...

"Course, if you're gonna name things, you'd better expect some criticism -- some people think *their* names are the only right ones!" Tsk! Where was the imagination? "Seems boring to me..."

What he was expecting: his son, the forest, the tin suit holding Zero. What he hadn't been nearly expecting was this: the gate of the giants, the silvery grass field, and the distinct lack of his son. He turned back quickly, hat placed back on his head in a swift motion. He hissed, “Jeb?” but the boy was nowhere around. Cain looked back at the domes, glowering. He checked to make sure his revolver was still tucked away, than strode towards the gate with a heavy purpose.

The man at the gate barely caught him, desperately waving out the journal and pamphlet, which should have been more or an interest to Cain than it was, but he thought he saw something in the distance, and the last thing he needed was to lose it. "Your name, sir, please!" the guard asked, sounding frustrated.

"Cain," he answered quickly, if only to get the man off him. Journal and pamphlet in hand, he slid in without another thought. That prattling was indeed familiar, although the woman wasn't, but at quick inspection she didn't seem threatening. Keeping careful of ( ... )
