Find this woman, Larxene had said, and shown them a picture, outside the city. Find her and hurt her. And so they were off, silently circling the domes like vultures, darting near but never entering the gates, as their orders had been to remain outside.

So when the first dusk found her, there had been an exodus from the gate, much to the relief of the citizens manning it, to the field where she had been found. And with slinking, flowing movements they moved toward her, like puppets on invisible strings.

Something was wrong. Lara didn't know why she thought that, or how, until she looked around her and noticed - what were they? They looked like nothing she had ever seen before, and they way they were moving, they couldn't be...

Natural. Lara frowned, drawing her guns and pointing them at the creatures. Somehow, they struck her as - what? Mindless? Malicious? She didn't know. What she did notice was that they seemed to know exactly what they were doing.

Still... "Stay where you are," she stated firmly, voice calm. She had enough ammo, it looked like, for some of them, but not all.

The dusks continued on, heedless of her warnings as if they were incapable of hearing her at all. There was no hesitation at all; they had their orders, and that was what mattered. All at once the ones closest to Lara darted forward, stretching out to attack and tear apart.

So much for that. Lara narrowed her eyes and fired her guns at the creatures, flipping away from them as she did so. She backed into the glowing fields and turned to run, keeping an eye on her pursuers as she did so.

What was this place? In all of her travels, she had never come up against anything like this - or even seen it. Mummies, yes. Raptors, yes. But these strange being, which glided silently as shadows and moved surprisingly fast, were utterly alien to her.

Some creatures twisted to the sides and out of the way, but others were hit, crumpling and disappearing as if they had never been there at all. But the others in pursuit gave no sign of so much as noticing the deaths of their comrades, simply working to chase and attack as they were ordered.

Encouraged by the reaction of the dying one, Lara flipped in order to shoot more of them, rapidly moving out of the way of the creatures' attacks. They were strong, yes, and fast - but Lara had faced worse in her years of travel. She could survive this. She knew she could.

Mentally going over the map Lara had studied in her journal during the train ride, Lara calculated her position and continued running. The church was a few more miles from here, if her memory was correct, and Lara frowned. She could, in theory, make it if she was able to stop running any time soon.

The dusks drew back as one as more of their number fell, seeming to disappear for the moment. In truth, they were traveling around and ahead of her, preparing an ambush. If she kept going in the direction she was headed, they would spring up all around her. If she changed direction... Well, they would give chase.

Lara halted for the moment to catch her breath and look around her, quickly scanning the area for any signs of danger. Noting that there seemed to be nothing at the moment, Lara closed her eyes for a few seconds, concentrating on getting her racing heartbeat back to normal and getting her bearings. When she opened her eyes again, she noticed that the strange creatures were still gone.

"Well," she muttered to herself, "that was certainly interesting." Reaching inside her bag, she pulled out more ammunition and reloaded her guns as she walked - no sense in being unprepared, after all.

Especially, Lara realized, half-grim after the unexpected attack, when she didn't know what could happen next.

As she drew closer, the dusks waited. Could they have felt, there would have been a collective anticipation, the thrill of the hunt. As it was, there was only a hollow sense of waiting and watching.

And then, once she was close enough and they were all around and under her, they struck, leaping up at once and closing in and clawing and pounding.

Lara shouted in surprise as the strange beings fell upon her. Luckily, she had had the sense not to holster her guns, so she quickly positioned them and fired, leaping and dodging. Even so, a set of claws managed to find her arm, and the explorer cried out in pain even as she continued to shoot at them. She hadn't the time to look at the moment, but she was sure she was bleeding, judging by the painful warmth of the wound.

She was angry now, and had no doubt that these creatures were, in some way, intelligent, so she continued firing resolutely at the beings.

They weren't going to keep her from her destination.
