The hallways are a constant ebb and flow of activity - trainees and managers and strangers passing by. Jaejoong’s standing in the corner near an open practice room; there’s dance music pouring out into the corridor. He’s watching the boy inside, a flurry of limbs and brown hair and eyes closed tight and determined.
Jaejoong scribbles a quick note on paper ripped from his notebook (come see me) and tapes it to the mirror. He leaves before Donghae even notices he was there.
“You’re pushing yourself too hard.” The wind plays with Donghae’s hair as Jaejoong watches him, the words dying on his lips at Donghae’s half-smile. Aren’t we all? it says. Jaejoong turns away - points to the sky. “It’s getting late.”
Donghae looks towards the stars, and suddenly he’s clenching his hands tight together, closing his eyes. Jaejoong watches his lips move silently - stares at the innocence in the gesture.
“I wish on those stars,” Donghae says, a moment later. His eyes are still closed and he’s leaning towards the night sky - too near to the roof’s edge, Jaejoong thinks, and inches closer to him.
“What do you wish for?” He thinks he could guess. Fame. A break - a group. Something naïve - Donghae’s still suspended in childhood, sixteen and boyish. (he hangs onto hope like Jaejoong still hangs on to tone-deaf worries.)
Donghae laughs, reaches hands toward the moon. His eyes are still closed. “Can’t tell you. Would break the magic.”
Jaejoong wraps arms around him, and he hums a melody to the sky - something he learned today during training, something he hasn’t quite perfected and he’s not sure if he ever will. When he looks down from the stars, Donghae’s staring up at him.
“Make a wish,” he murmurs.
Jaejoong leans his head on Donghae’s shoulder. He makes a wish.
