Smoke's been trying to recover from the Wilderness and thought some sleep would do some good after being away from his own bed for that long. Then comes... this interesting number. It's more than a little weird, feeling it all from her perspective. That last feeling of the wings dropping off? Not a very good feeling. Being the smaller body surrounded by muscular arms, knowing what he smelled like to her, feeling his own lips on 'his' skin, that was more than a little weird. It also evoked more than a few half-memories in him he'd have rather kept buried
( ... )
Yes, he was really going to start this, because it was late and even he got a little loopy on little sleep. Plus, what Kurayami didn't know was how Gojyo used to act around Goku when they were playing around - so like Gojyo, Smoke could devolve into childish playfulness without the Sphere's assistance in the right situation.
Like right now.
He smirked and then just stood up straight again, hands behind his back> Then, he started scooting around in a circle, dragging his feet until he would pause, scoot some more, pause again, and repeat. He was grinning the whole time, knowing it was just ridiculous.
Now this would have been a great moment for the kettle to boil. With nothing better to do with her hands, Kurayami crossed her arms and leaned one hip against the table, and just watched him goofing around, one eyebrow raised. He was scooting out of her range of vision as soon as she turned her head, making her swivel this way and that to keep her eye on him in case he tried for another tickle attack.
"What the hell are you doing?" she asked finally, rather mildly despite the confused expletive. He had that playful smirk on, tugging at the corners of his mouth, and it was making it difficult for her to keep a straight face.
Smoke just pointed right back at her with a knowing smile, then took a few steps closer. "That, right there, is what I'm doing. Making you smile."
He scuffed his feet high as he walked towards her, then sat down at the table with one elbow propped up so he could look towards her. "Am I not allowed to do that?"
His face was still smug, for sure, but it was far different from the kinds of smiles she saw on him when they first met, and not just because he was being playful just then. He wasn't trying to charm 'a girl' - he was trying to charm her, Kurayami, specifically in this moment.
For a second, she tried to wipe the smile off her face - then she recognized her own contrariness, and couldn't help but chuckle.
"Well, I won't stop you," she said, and glanced at the kettle, which was starting to rattle on her tiny can-stove.
Looking back at him, she caught the look on his face and hesitated. She'd always liked his features, in an aesthetic way at the very least - he was a striking guy - but that was an arresting expression, even for him. She swallowed, and absently pushed a strand of hair out of her eyes, abruptly wishing...
...what? That she was a beauty, too? Ha. She shook her head a little at her own folly, and sat back against the table to just enjoy the look of him. It was nice, to not be alone on a night like this.
"Glad to hear it. It's a good look on you." It was some light-hearted teasing, which he hoped she took well. She was starting to loosen up around, which he was so happy about, but the circumstances of the evening being what they were... He didn't begrudge her that bit of obstinance coming back.
He kept his eyes fixed on her and a grin on his face, just to let her know she had his full attention. It wasn't for the purpose of 'undressing her with his eyes' or anything like that - he just wanted to observe her moving, doing things. It felt so familiar, in a pleasant way - not to be doted on, but to just... have someone else involved in a mundane, routine task of daily life, as odd as that sounded.
He started to wonder if that wasn't because of her dream, or because of his past. Maybe a combo of both.
It was a strange thing, to just sit and look at someone, while they looked back. She was used to glancing up and down from subject to paper, but having permission to stare...
She wasn't sure if it was awkward or a luxury. His smile undid some of the awkwardness, at least. She was just wondering if the moment was stretching out for too long when the kettle started to whistle, breaking it.
Sliding off the table, she threw him a slightly apologetic look and busied herself with cups and bags of tea. A minute or two later, she was handing him a steaming cup, holding her own gingerly in her other hand.
"Careful," she warned him. "It's still pretty hot."
It wasn't exactly how he planned to spend his evening - he planned to still be asleep right about now - but sipping tea quietly with Kurayami was head and shoulders above his past few weeks in the Wilderness. He didn't make a big show unless she stopped smiling again.
Unfortunately, he really needed his sleep as much as she did. He sat with her on her bed for a little while, just long enough to make sure she'd be able to fall asleep again, before gently excusing himself. He made sure she had her balance, then stood up to face her.
Being with him was...comforting. The knowledge that someone was there, the warmth radiating from him where he sat next to her, was infinitely more steadying than the cup of tea. She finished it anyway, and sat in quiet contemplation of its empty insides for a long moment, nearly nodding off over it.
Then Smoke moved, and she stirred awake again, reflexively standing to take his cup.
"Sorry," she said, sleepily. She was...very close to drifting away again, which was more than a little impressive, considering how she'd woken up. Usually it took her hours to go back to sleep after one of her dreams, but this was the second time that...that...
Hnn. Giving her head a little shake, she forced herself to stay awake just a few minutes longer. "Thanks," she said, smiling up at him. Her hand was on his cheek - when had it gotten there? - half-cradling, half-covering the scars. "I...think I can sleep now
