Hi, I'm Michelle from the cat community. I read this article, too, and have many of the same thoughts. Like you, I know MUCH more about cats, but I do like dogs and had one (a Sheltie) growing up
( ... )
My parents had a purebred Golden Retriever and she had a whole host of behavior and health problems. She was from a pet store (likely a puppy mill) and I suspect many of her problems were due to inbreeding, particularly her spazzy/hyper nature and her bad hips.
From what I understand, domestic short/long hairs are just mutts. Fur coloring has very little, if anything, to do with personality traits. I know there are "breed traits" with the purebred lines, such as Ragdolls or Persians, but even those aren't true for every cat.
I think it will be interesting to see where the designer breeds end up in ten years. I think breeders can go overboard for the sake of looks - for example, most Pugs have severe respiratory problems because their faces are so smooshed, yet the look is appealing so breeders keep going for it. What I hate the most is the growing attitude of disposable pets and the negative stereotypes surrounding shelter dogs/cats.

My Sheltie had his share of issues, too, but I loved him.
I'm definitely pro-shelter. The only reason that none of my cats came from one is because I got them from people who were giving away kittens BEFORE it got to that point. Well, except for Emma. I got her as an adult from a friend who could not keep her.
What I hate the most is the growing attitude of disposable pets and the negative stereotypes surrounding shelter dogs/cats. Sad to say, there are certain celebrities who seem to encourage this. No offense of you're a big Paris Hilton fan, but she treats her pets like crap. Taking a kinkajou shopping? Please! No wonder her pet one attacked her. If you're too stupid or selfish to understand the meaning of "nocturnal", you really should not own exotic pets. And even the dogs are not safe. No dog I've ever known wants to go shopping and to clubs. Most dogs just want to go to the park or something!
