No worries, sweetie. Giving thanks is also a mantra. Counting beads while chanting your personal mantra is a bit of a difficulty if you're not used to it. I always use the good old Om Mani Padma Hum, or Om Mani Prpl Hung. Not that long ago I saw in an interview (dutch paper) that the Dalai Lama made a funny remark about that mantra, he said it sometimes sounded like the monks were counting money instead of blessings, because of the way they pronounce Mani while "fast-chanting" It than sounds like this. Oom Money Pay me Hoom.
It's the intention that counts, not the quality.

Very good to know! Thank you very much! Can you believe I've still got my mala inside it's bag because I worried i'd do something wrong and sort of "offend" it you might say.

Use some smudging or incense vefore wearing or using it. I once had a Rudhrak Mala from India, but I haven't found it back since I moved. A Rudhrak is a sacred seed that has more then one "face" and the more faces the seed-bead has the stronger it is. Mine had three faces. I still hope to find it back one day.

Which smell or taste is entirely un-important, it's not the quality but the intention. Just burn a piece of incense, even if it is for a few seconds and get the mala in a circle clock-wise three times through the smoke, whilst you say the mantra, also three times. With that both you and the mala are blessed.
