Wow. This is depressing Paul. Thanks for bringing me more depressing news...as if watching the news wasn't bad enough. Just kidding - this is really informative and information is never bad - plus you got a lot of great comments and feedback here. Thanks for talking about this...depressing or not.

Yeah, the short fiction field has its ups and downs. I'm still in the camp that feels it is in the slumps now...but who knows. Maybe 2010 will be a great time to be writing short stories.
