Sort of a drive-by post here, and not any of the posts I actually wanted to be writing. But this essay about the effects of our cultural move from browsing an open Internet for information and connections to the use of proprietary networks like Facebook, and of apps rather than browsers, is worth all the buzz it's been getting ( Read more... )

"I killed the Internet" is an amazing article, putting into clear language what we've all been experiencing. I may share less guilt by avoiding social networking - I've refused to touch Facebook since the beginning - but it's getting harder as everyone seems to be jumping on the bandwagon. I don't know what family members are doing now, because they are doing it on Facebook, and no one writes letters any more, and seldom even email.

And if I allow myself to get caught up in specialized apps, I'm still gonna be part of the problem by supporting the dismemberment of what started out as the best and most open Social Network of all.

The "walled garden" is a apt metaphor. I'm going to be sharing this link with others. Thanks for telling us about it!
