More than once since arriving at work in the morning, Wilson had contemplated tracking Dr. Julian down and asking just how, exactly, he’d managed to get through med school. Well, that wasn’t actually fair since Wilson knew the man was a good doctor. But an acting department head? That was another matter. Wilson hadn’t even had time to check in with any patients yet; he’d been too caught up in administration and staffing problems. It was amazing how much crap could build up after only five days ( ... )

House grimaced and closed his eyes. He didn't want to go in there. Being afraid to be in the same room as Wilson... that was purely unheard of. Heaving a deep sigh, he used the handle of his cane to push the door open and when the door swung open fully, House stood there, looking at Wilson gingerly, feeling his stomach twist and knot sharply before he looked away, at the myriad of trophies Wilson had on the shelf behind him ( ... )

Wilson got an almost violent jolt when he recognised House’s very familiar voice coming from the doorway, not just because it was House but because he was the last person Wilson had expected to show up at his office door. Turning slowly, as if he wasn’t quite sure he wanted to, Wilson looked over at House and didn’t say anything for a while - even after it was apparent that House wasn’t going to say anything more. He was fighting hard to keep his emotions off his face, to stuff them back and down as far as they could go.

This was work, Wilson told himself. That was the only reason House had come to see him, because friends or not, ‘lovers’ or not, Wilson knew House still respected him as a doctor. It was obvious by his expression, his words and his tone that House didn’t want to be talking to him. That thought made it easy to detach himself, to be entirely ‘Dr. Wilson’ and not James…and definitely not Jimmy ( ... )

House looked back up to Wilson's face, both glad to hear Wilson's voice subdued of any emotion because it meant he could remain as neutral as Wilson was sounding, yet feeling a twist of guilt within him at the same time. Being talked to like he was nobody important to Wilson was... it was hurtful. He'd never been spoken to by Wilson like that before. Yet he knew he was the main cause of it and because of that knew he had no right to feel hurt.

"Uh..." House looked away again as he reluctantly stepped into Wilson's office. It felt like he was stepping into unknown territory, a place where he wasn't welcome or wanted. Maybe I should just ask someone else, House thought to himself. There are other oncologists that can give me their opinion on the x-ray imaging. Though... he didn't respect their opinion like he respected Wilson's. He took a few more cautious steps into Wilson's office, stopping short of his desk ( ... )
