Books about the Pacific

I had such fun writing Tall Ship Tales, and people seem to appreciate the background that went into it.  A lot of my "research" was just googling around, but here are some actual books that I actually read.  I recommend them all, especially the first and the last.

The expedition of the St Jean-Baptiste to the Pacific 1769-1770.  From the Journals ( Read more... )

research, books, tall ship tales

Oh, man. That first book sounds amazing! Though, it seems like it would be difficult obtaining a copy of it, considering how there aren't very many copies available on Amazon. Did you buy the book?

I have access to a wonderful, eccentric library. Maybe if you search around, you can find other books about Surville and the Saint Jean Baptiste...

Maybe I'll check out my university library. They have a lot of books -- so many that it's quite intimidating, especially since they don't alphabetize by author. :( Oh, but I've been meaning to read your Tall Ship Tales for a few days because it keeps popping up on my friends page, but I haven't had the time. It's definitely on my to-do list. Stupid school work.

Thanks! It makes me giggle like mad.

Pubic leaves and canoes! LOL

That first one sounds very entertaining. I may have to check that out.

I'm afraid the first is probably the hardest to get hold of. I was lucky there.

I love when people post links to their trusted sources and interesting book finds (although it does just lead to me trying to shoe-horn new books into the already groaning bookshelfs of doom) - so thanks for these.

For UK-ites, a good source of hard to get books (relatively cheaply) is Abebooks which I guess makes me sound like some sort of market harker, but this is where I get most of my pretties from.

The first one does sound especially worthwhile!

Thanks for the Abebooks link. Think I'll be using that to feed my Dr Syn craving.

heh! Good craving to feed!

I tracked down a copy of The expedition of the St Jean-Baptiste... and at first flick-through it looks fascinating. Thanks again :)
