Haven't had a chance to write much of anything the last momth or so, except for the one short story I'm working on. However, I do have a bit of writing related news. My story "Profit and Loss" got nominated over at the Rogue Poet Awards (http://awards.rogue-poet.com/) for Best General ( Read more... )

Meh. Everyone gets nominated for these things. Good luck.

It's an interesting story, but I'm not sure I quite understand it. Dana put the stake under a lampshade during a bad dream?

Well, I've never taken a survey, so I couldn't say what percentage of fan writers get nominated. However, it takes a bit of time and effort in today's busy world to put somebody else's name into consideration at a reward site; so to me the nomination is a big deal, and even more of an honor than getting an award itself. It's great to be considered a writer good enough to be read; being a writer good enough to make somebody take action is wonderful.

Having said that, I'll be the first to admit "Lost and Found" isn't my best work. It's a "tribute", really, to -- my daughter's room. Basically I was poking fun of the teenage ability to turn their living space into a complete mess where anything can disappear, but as for the story itself yes, Dana did indeed put the stake there as a result of one of her nightmares. The idea was to add a little mystery as to what her dream was actually about, but I guess it wasn't mysterious so much as confusing.

Sorry, I'm feeling a little cynical at the moment. It seems like a lot of my flist gets awards. Maybe I just associate with good writers.

Hey, it's fall -- I'm going to by cynical for the next 5-6 months, so I know how moments like that feel. But I choose to believe that you *do* happen to associate with good writers!

She's probably my favourite one ep char.

I've been thinking it over, and I agree -- I don't think we're the only ones, either. For a one ep character, Dana certainly does end up in a lot of fics. She's really hard to write well, though.

Poor Dana, indeed. I'm still writing as much as I can, although that might not be as apparent here because I'm trying to concentrate on original fiction for publication. I'll never completely abandon fanfiction, though -- too much fun.

I'm kind of sorry that this was your first exposure to "Four Friends", because this little tribute to my daughter's room is far from the best of those stories. In fact, I've thought a few times about deleting the very first FF story, because it was more of a setup for the series and not all that great as a story. Some of the other stories -- pardon me for bragging -- are a lot better, with a few little fluffy vignettes thrown in among them.

YAY you. You are one of the very best Gen writers. Love your handle on the character voices.

Congratulations.
