Baby You Can Drive My Car, If You Can Find It

I kept a secret for the last year, but now it's time to let that secret escape.

In September of 2016, our beloved Ford Focus fell victim to a guy trying to turn into traffic with the setting sun in his eyes. We replaced it with what became equally beloved, a 2014 Ford Escape, which I call burgundy but which is technically ruby red.

I love red cars and that’s a very rich red colour. Newer cars have so much STUFF don’t they. I must admit I love heated seats - so good if you have a sore back lol!

Oh yes--my back needs all the help it can get.

My first car had AM radio and roll down windows, no computers at all, and there was so much about it that couldn't break because it didn't exist! There's something to be said for that.

Very smart... all of them; I really like that colour. It is rarer here where almost every car is depressingly black or grey, with the occasional navy blue, or white. Then about 1% (or so it seems!) are nice colours like yours - or my Citroën Cactus which is 'Lagoon Blue', or bright turquoise to the rest of us.

I have a computer screen and, even after six years, I don't like it. It is fine if there is a passenger, but when I am alone it means taking my eyes off the road to look at it, and also my hand off the wheel to do anything, which on small twisty roads like most of them are on-island, is really dangerous. But I am all in favour of the reversing camera, heated seats and steering wheel.

I wonder if the reason why I see so many red cars is because the less catching colors just don't catch my eye? I do like the bright turquoise, but Emily wants a black car next time. It all depends on what deal we find.

You can actually talk to our car computer, and give it instructions without looking away from the road. I don't, because my experience with speaking to computers mostly amounts to "I'm sorry; I didn't get that". At which point I raise my voice even more. I've had Emily call me from the car, though, and the mapping app is really nice--it tells you when you're coming up to turns and such.

I would really appreciate a sort of in-car Alexa - 'turn the heating up', 'change the radio to 3FM', 'check how much fuel is left', and so on would be so much easier.

My sister regularly calls family members from her car - but I think it might be a bit distracting.

I like my bright blue car because it is easily spotted in a carpark full of blacks and greys :)

Our car can do a lot with voice commands, but I really don't know--I never finished reading the instructions! But really, there's nothing in a modern car that isn't a distraction, in one way or another.
