4WD are not good on snow? I always assumed they would be safer - I suppose it depends who is driving them as well … ;)

Oh, 4WD is great pulling a vehicle through snow! It's just worthless on ice, or on snow if the vehicle starts sliding--as if it were on ice. But you're right, it often depends on who's driving it.
