They're called morels -- they actually have a bit of a steak-like taste to them, and they're the only mushrooms I ever liked. Here's the fun part: No one has ever been able to successfully domesticate them, so they're relatively rare. But I found some!
They play a major part in a mystery novel I'm working on--I'm having lots of fun with it.
Don't tell anyone, but every couple of years or so I've been finding a bunch of morels in my yard, near a tree that I didn't realize was dying. Now that it's been cut down I expect that won't happen anymore, but at least I got those two this year. Yummy!
That's one of the tricks, apparently, to find a place where foliage has either died or been cut down. Part of the plot of one of my new novels has to do with morels, and their value ... maybe I should find a cookbook publisher to shop it to.
Lovely post. I wish I could share it to my FB group where people are shaming each other for various behaviors. It's crazy. And you found morels, you lucky devil.
Copy and paste! Or you could forward the link from my Facebook account, where I put it up yesterday.
Yep, we found a total of four morels, right in our yard where a tree was cut down last year. We had an even bigger haul once in the past, but now that the dead wood has been removed I'd guess that's just about it. Finding them prompted me to find out more about morels, which gave me an idea for a mystery story, which I finished the first draft of earlier this year.

And yay! I recognise the purple plant in the second picture - it has just turned up as a gate crasher in my garden and I now know it is ajuga!

Ajuga, huh? I think around here they're mostly considered a nuisance plant, but as far as I'm concerned any bloom is a good bloom!

Enjoy!
