A tale of two photos

I posted a photo on Instagram in August that was pretty popular, even though I thought it was a little dark. I've noticed that I tend to prefer a lightened version of my photos, but now I'm wondering if they're better, or if's just me preferring brighter. So ... I'm asking you. I think I prefer the original- the sky is more dramatic.

The darker one looks better in my opinion. With how the lighting is--the way the sun is on the clouds--the lightened one looks a bit weird c:

I'm in two minds - I prefer seeing the people more clearly in the second picture, but dislike the sky which is much more effective in the first.

I agree with spikereader, actually. The sky doesn't look right lightened, but the family is clearer.
