For future reference, baking soda works great for smothering fires like that. I always keep an extra large box or two around. It's safe to use on greasy items because it's dry. I've used baking soda on toaster fires and also small saucepan incidents and oven issues, etc. (My dad has unbelievably bad fire karma.)

My co-worker found a newspaper with a front page story of a wildfire with tons of smoke and wrote "samosa" on top and left it on my desk, heeee.
Still at work today too.... And thanks for the baking soda tip! I have to remember that.

Mostly I am amused now -- the smoke smell is gone, and I am left only with the indelible image of a samosa in flames.
