But that's the thing with Homicide. You're always meant to be a bit uncomfortable (which is probably why NBC was always a bit uncomfortable about having it on its schedule). That series confronts you with your own discomfort and makes you think about it.

Well, I was actually more uncomfortable because I wasn't sure if they meant to have that subtext there are not. It wasn't framed like how the show usually seems to frame difficult subjects, and I was more uncomfortable about their unspoken assumptions about American and whatnot.

I think it was probably intended, though it's been years since I saw the episode. Bolander was one of those nearly Archie Bunker type characters, I think.

I guess we'll just have to agree to disagree then, as I'm still not convinced that the show meant it as commentary on Munch's Jewishness and assumptions of nationality.

The "soapy feel of the serial-killer" thing is what had to be brought in to keep the series on air, and it does continue that way from now on.

There are some melodramatic plotlines later on that are really good, though.
