In Donoghue's defense, the part with the cleaver is actually historical fact. She came across the tidbit on the execution of Mary Saunders for murdering Jane Jones with a cleaver and decided to write a book on how Mary got there.

I know, me too! Also, I was in Italy and didn't have that much reading material with me. And by the time I got to the cleaver, it was too late.
