I saw the Kodo Drummers when they came through here a couple of years ago. And it was the evening I was coming down off of a two-day migraine (this was before I got the drugs). I was terrified that the drumming would kick it off again, and was thanking my lucky stars that I'd managed to get a ticket waaaaay up in the top of the top balcony. But it didn't, and I enjoyed the performance. :D

* Ack! I keep meaning to ask you this but forget - I'm putting some art into the art show at Ycon, but they're too big to take on the plane (16 x 20" when matted). Would it be convenient to mail the package to you, since I'm assuming I'll see rachelmanija and/or you on Thursday before the con? If it would require you to go to a post office to pick it up or something like that, then don't worry about it - I can always mail it to myself at the hotel if I have to (it's just that hotels often charge fees for receiving packages and I'm trying to avoid that unless necessary).

It won't be enormous or anything - five matted prints, about 16 x 20 x 3" or so.

Yeah, maybe we could all have dinner Thursday night?

SOunds good to me. And if anyone's up for doing SF that day, I'm free. And for whatever during the con - I have so far no plans for anything set up. :)

I love taiko, and I think it's very closely related to some Japanese martial arts. They use some of the same formal stances: front stance and horse-riding stance, and they do move very much like they're doing a kata. Also, the drummers are so strong and sexy ( ... )

Oooo, guh.

And yes to the stances! That's what they reminded me of!

They start wearing the jackets, with the men in black and the women in red, and then, in a perfectly timed and choreographed movement, they strip off the jackets, revealing those incredibly sexy x-back garments on the men and red tank tops on the women. That bit invariably gets wolf whistles interspersed with thunderous applause.

What, no conch shells? I think the only taiko performances I've seen have been for New Year's Day, another reason to celebrate on Dec. 30 instead of Dec. 31.

I vaguely recall that one of the SF writers (woman) on LJ plays taiko. In Kansas City??? Just thought I'd mention it, while trying to remember what I'm really supposed to be doing.

Cool! Maybe Kij Johnson? I remember reading a bit on her LJ a while back.

That sounds right. It's been a while since I read the entry/entries. I wouldn't be very surprised if more taiko drummers turned up though. Maybe by a search using LJ interests.
