I Hope I Diet Before I Get Old

Being a local celebrity of sorts had its hazards. The show business world of Houston was certainly not the cauldron of LA or New York, but having chosen the life of being onstage and seeking publicity, I found that often eyes are trained on you that you might never realize. And that people might feel free to comment on you, your life, and your ( Read more... )

Apropos of nothing, I have a memory of you a long long time ago, in our little rented house on... Breyburn St, however you spell it, I think it was just before we moved? And you were wearing your sunglasses pushed up on top of your head. I'd never seen anyone do that before. I thought it was cool, so... I started doing it and still do to this day. The end.

The Fat Tuesday Band is one of my very favorite stories of back in the day.

Is there not some amount of irony in that way we look back at ourselves and think, Good God, I WASN'T that fat! Being late middle age and mother of a pair and a spare and a former trophy wife, well, it's quite a thing to see what adjectives come up when we talk about ourselves.

You know my favorite thing that you do? Point out artifice that surrounds us and thereby take the strength out of it. Like naming the monster makes him less scary? Facing the fear makes it less powerful? Looking straight on at plastic people and plastic ideas and phoney institutions (with the right head on)... and suddenly they have no sway. Kevin Gilbert would be so proud.

Kevin is a prophet. Some of his songs are beautiful and moving sermons. I think I should have a T-Shirt that says "Everything I needed to know in life I learned from Kevin Gilbert". But then some politically correct guy would re-write his ending, wouldn't he?
